Hello Everyone,
A Scrum product backlog is a list of activities and requirements which is
developed using the roadmap of a project the development team is expected
to perform. This list makes it easier to plan and decide which activities need
to be performed at what time and estimate the time taken for a specific
activity (Radigan, n.d.).
The backlog is prepared in a certain order so that it shows the most
important/critical tasks on top of the list. The determination of the
importance of a task is influenced by factors like customer requirements, the
time limit on getting feedback, the correlation between two activities, and
feedback from customers and the development team (Radigan, n.d.). This
allows the development team to understand which tasks are supposed to be
finished first.
After a roadmap is created, the initiatives in the roadmap are broken down
into smaller packages called “epics” which are then broken down into tasks
which are called “user stories”. Once these epics and user stories are
created, these tasks are analyzed and the product backlog is created. Inputs
from the customers, the development team, the designers, and the product
owner are used to create a product backlog but the backlog is owned by the
product owner (
Product Backlog
, n.d.).
The product owner is responsible for maintaining the backlog so that it is up
to date and in keeping with the changes that occur as the project progresses.
The product owner has to keep reviewing the backlog and keep updating
when stakeholder feedback is received or when there are changes or new
developments in the planning of the project. Providing frequent updates to
relevant parties, making sure the backlog consists of activities that are not
just customer-centric, and making changes to the lists as and when required
are some of the ways to maintain the product backlog throughout the sprints
(Radigan, n.d.).
