Project 3-2 Network Configuration IP Address - a unique address that identifies a device on the internet or a local network. It allows a system to be recognized by other systems connected via the Internet protocol . DNS - is for domain name system. Instead of typing the IP address to websites, we can type a name for the site. A server is a computer that provides data to other computers. It may serve data to systems on a local area network ( LAN ) or a wide area network ( WAN ) over the Internet. In the computer world, servers have clients . The "client-server" architecture is common in both local and wide area networks. For example, if an office has a server that stores the company's database on it, the other computers in the office that can access the dat a base are " clients " of the server. VPN - Stands for "Virtual Private Network" , A virtual private network is " tunneled " through a wide area network WAN such as the Internet. This means the network does not have to be located in one physical location like a LAN . B y using encryption and other security measures, a VPN can scramble all the data sent through the wide area network, so the network is "virtually" private. Firewall - acts as a barrier between a trusted system or network and outside connections, such as the Internet . A computer firewall is more of a filter than a wall, allowing trusted data to flow through it. A LAN is a network of connected devices that exist within a specific location. LANs may be found in homes, offices, educational institution, or other areas. A LAN may be wired , wireless , or a combination of the two. A standard wired LAN uses Ethernet to connect devices together. Wireless LANs are typically created
using a Wi-Fi signal. If a router supports both Ethernet and Wi-Fi connections, it can be used to create a LAN with both wired and wireless devices. WAN - Wide Area Network. WANs are not limited to a single location. Many wide area networks span long distances via telephone lines, fiber optic cables, or satellite links. They can also be composed of smaller LANs that are interconnected. The Internet could be described as the biggest WAN in the world.
