Touchstone Task 1: Planning a Network
Review the scenario and client expectations
about Greenfield Properties. Based on the information provided by the client, answer the following questions in 2-4 sentences each. Be sure to explain your answers in detail.
How many employees will the new company have, and how many total devices, including PCs, tablets, and smartphones? (Ref: Touchstone Scenario)
Employees: 46
Devices: 95
What network architecture will be used: client/server or peer-to-peer? Why? (Ref: Types of Networks
)
This should be a client/server network, since all employees are expected to share resources from anywhere, and certain employees must access databases.
When on-site employees access the network, will it be a PAN, LAN, or WAN? Why? (Ref: Types of Networks
)
LAN, this type of network is for local devices, which would apply to onsite employees only.
What type(s) of cable should be used to connect the in-house hosts to the switch or router? (Ref: Coaxial & Twisted Pair Cables
)
It makes more sense to use a twisted pair cable, since it is less expensive than coaxial. These
are also more effective since they reduce signal loss.
Describe the types of servers that will be needed in order to meet the company’s networking goals. (Ref: Network Operating Systems
)
File server, Mail server, Database server, Application server, Print server, Web server
Do you think the servers should be on-premises, cloud-based, or a hybrid? Why?
Hybrid. This server must be accessed by employees off-campus, along with on-site employees. A hybrid server would allow specific employees to have access to certain databases without the concern of other users.
What operating system(s) should be used on the servers? Why? (Ref: Network Operating Systems
)
Since staff have limited knowledge, a Windows standard server would be best. This is easy to
use out of the box, and doesn’t have the customization Linux does.
Will multiple servers be virtualized on a single physical server? Why or why not? (Ref: Network Operating Systems
This could be a good application of OS-Level Virtualization, since it allows less overhead and is compatible with the mobile employees.
If you chose Microsoft Server software, which edition will you select, and why? (Ref: Network Operating Systems
)
Standard due to the number of devices and virtual machine needs.
If you choose Linux, which distro(s) will you select, and why? (Ref: Network Operating Systems
)
