What is the purpose of software T&E? Define Black box testing.
The Software testing and evaluation is a specialized category of testing that many program managers utilize when attempting to test and deploy their weapon systems. Managers
often face various T&E issues that need to be resolved before they can continue with testing and deployment. Some issues may include support for modeling + simulation, combined and concurrent testing, allocation of test resources, testing for survivability and lethality, multi-
service testing, or international T&E. Each issue has unique challenges for program managers as
they design their T&E program's integrated strategy.
Software development is considered to have a greater risk when it comes to military weapons and National Security Systems (NSS). Software that is present in Major Automated Information Systems (MAISs) and weapon system software. MAISs are high-cost software systems that provide the following end-item solutions for user requirements: personnel records
management systems, financial accounting systems, or logistics records. The performance requirements for MAISs usually determine the host hardware configurations and are overseen by the Information Technology Acquisition Board (ITAB), which is chaired by the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Networks and Information Integration (ASD(NII))/Chief Information Officer (CIO)). The Director of Operational Test and Evaluation (DOT&E) is a principal member of
the ITAB.
Once the software development process has peaked at a level of maturity past what can
be achieved through human testing, it may come down to conducting computerized software-
only testing. As a "build" or as a whole, the functionality of the software is evaluated in this type of testing. It is highly important to have proper documentation so that test results can be correlated with the appropriate version of the “build”. This type of software testing falls into two categories of testing, which are "black box" and "white box" testing techniques.
White Box testing is a type of structural test of the internal logic and software structure that provides an opportunity for more detailed identification and testing of important paths. The process and objects are similar to the next type of test, black box testing. When it comes to Black box testing, it is more of a functional test that is a specific software unit without knowledge of how the internal structure or logic will process the input and obtain a specific output. Testing software's ability to handle abnormal events involves both within-boundary and out-of-boundary stimulants. The most likely cases are tested to ensure that the software performs as specified. However, even the simplest software designs can quickly become too complex to test all possible alternatives.
What is the purpose of a live fire test?
Live Fire Test (LFT) was developed in 1987 and mandated by Congress under the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The law that was signed stipulated that a major Acquisition program development may not proceed “Beyond low-rate initial production” until a realistic test was conducted. The test specifically goes into survivability or lethality. Before this was made into law, in 1984, the OSD had a similar program that was chartered as a “Joint test Program” which was designed to be conducted in a similar way. This original program was
divided into two distinct parts: Armor/Anti-Armor and aircraft. The objectives of the study were
to collect empirical data on the vulnerability of the existing U.S. systems to Soviet weapons, gather empirical data on the lethality of the existing U.S. weapons against Soviet systems, provide insights into the design changes required to reduce vulnerabilities and improve the lethality of the current U.S. weapon systems and calibrate the current vulnerability and lethality
models.
Modern-day Live-Fire Tests and Evaluations (LFT&E) have not changed much since their inception. The LFT&E is an assessment of the vulnerability and lethality of a specific system during the Developmental Test and Evaluations. This is done all before the Full-Rate Production (FRP), which AcqNotes define as “
Contracting for economic production quantities following stabilization of the system design and validation of the production process.” The purpose of Live-Fire Tests and evaluation should be to provide information to the decision-makers on casualties, vulnerabilities, and lethality while also taking into consideration the susceptibility to attack and combat performance of the system. The test also ensures that knowledge of user casualties and system vulnerabilities is based on testing the system under realistic conditions. Next, LFT&E should allow any design deficiency modified by the testing and evaluation to be corrected prior to the low-rate initial production phase and assess recoverability from battle-damaged systems. Live fire test and evaluation is one of the most important steps in testing and evaluating any system being procured. This is because it is where realistic conditions can have an impact on
the system and ensure that the equipment is appropriate for the warfighter. To ensure that any necessary design changes resulting from the testing and analysis may be made before moving beyond the low-rate initial production (LRIP) stage, the LFT&E strategy for a given system should be structured and scheduled accordingly.
