A summary of the data set you have chosen
The title of the selected dataset is “state-wide math and reading proficiency by grade and
school year.” However, it is a non-federal dataset which is covered by different terms of use.
While that is the case, the dataset has information on the state-wide academic progress of
students in two subjects – reading and math. The results are annual and starts with the school
year ending 2014. Public schools and districts in Iowa annually report to the state’s Department
of Education through the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). The determinations of all AYP are
made on an annual basis by assessing students reading and math performance. How proficient
students are is based on a standard score scale.

Identification of the dimensions and measure fields that are part of this data set
Dimensions refer to the fields representing people, places, things, time, or events and
typically use identification number. On the other hand, measures are the fields storing counts or
numbers that can be easily totaled and averaged. In this data, there is only one dimension which
is the topic. The two topics are reading and math. On the other hand, measures are the school
year, grade, not-proficient, proficient, total tested, and % proficient.
