Introduction: In this lab project, I will be setting up a Smart Home Network using Cisco Packet Tracer. The primary objective is to establish a network of IoT devices and showcase authentication through a smartphone using a Home Gateway. This exercise will enhance my understanding of IoT networking and the principles of device authentication. Preparation: Before commencing the project, it's important to prepare the necessary equipment and software: Cisco Packet Tracer software. Virtual devices: Router, Smartphone, Smart Lights, Smart Fan, Garage Door, A smoke Detector and a Smart Lock. Ethernet cables for connecting the devices. (i.e., Router, Switch and Home Gateway) Part 1 - Building the Topology: 1. Begin by launching Cisco Packet Tracer and creating a new project. 2. Add the router, smartphone, and IoT devices to the workspace. (Figure 1) 3. Use Ethernet cables and WIFI to connect the devices, simulating a network. 4. Organize the devices logically for efficient communication. (Figure 1) Part 2 - Configuring the Topology: 1. Router Configuration: Access the router's configuration panel. (Figure 2) Assign IP addresses to each device's interface that is connected to the router. (Figure 2 to 6) 2. IoT Devices Configuration: Configure IP addresses for each IoT device's interface, ensuring they match the router's configuration. (Figure 7 & 8) 3. Home Gateway Configuration:
Access the settings of the Home Gateway. (Figure 2 & 3) Configure the Home Gateway's Wi-Fi settings, such as SSID (Baldeep7728) and WPA2 security. (Figure 10) 4. Smartphone Authentication: Configure the smartphone to connect to the Home Gateway's Wi-Fi network using the provided SSID and security key (BaldeepS). (Figure 6) 5. Interaction: On smartphone IOT monitor, Using the Home Gateway's ip address (192.168.1.2) in our case. Using default user id and password (admin). We can access all configured IOT devices Use the smartphone to interact with IoT devices. Control smart lights, adjust Fan Speed, and simulate controlling the smart lock. (Figure 9) Screenshots

Using a Home Gateway for authentication, instead of complex lists, taught me about central access points. This is like how our devices connect at home through a central router. Seeing the smartphone control different devices was cool. It made me think about how smart homes can simplify things through one device. I also considered how a smooth simulation might differ in real life due to network issues like delays. It's a reminder of the importance of stable networks. Observations: 1. Device Arrangement: Smart placement of devices and connections mattered for smooth networking, much like arranging things at home. 2. Home Gateway's Role: The Home Gateway acted like a central checkpoint, connecting devices like our home Wi-Fi. 3. Simple Authentication: Setting up my phone to connect easily showed me how important user-friendly systems are for security. 4. Controlling Devices: Using the smartphone to control gadgets gave me a glimpse into how our lives could become simpler with smart tech. 5. Real-Life Considerations: Even though things worked well in the simulation, real networks might face delays and hitches, which is good to know.
