[The environmental system in use of my chosen scenario involves the sustainable mining practices, waste management, and efforts to minimize the impact on the natural environment. This can have an impact on human behavior in several ways. If mining operations lead to environmental degradation, it can affect the health, livelihoods, and overall well-being of local communities. If proper waste management is not met, then this could lead to pollution which could disrupt the habitats of where and how people live.] Describe the impact of the current resource use on the environment. [Mining can have significant negative impacts on the environment. These impacts include habitat destruction, soil erosion, water pollution, air pollution, and deforestation. The destruction of habitats is caused when large areas of land are cleared to fulfil these mining projects. These projects cause erosion of the soil when they remove vegetation and topsoil during mining, which affects the quality and fertility of the soil. Mining can also cause water pollution when harmful substances are introduced into water sources contaminating rivers and groundwater. The emissions produced from mining operations could pollute local air quality which could potentially cause global environmental issues.] Describe how human ideology impacts behavior regarding the environmental systems. [The behaviors behind the environmental systems of Mining are impacted by those who advocate for sustainable and eco-friendly mining practices. While some advocate for safe practices to ensure the environmental well-being, others may be driven by economic ideology. These individuals prioritize resource extraction and economic development while overlooking or downplaying environmental concerns.] Explain the role of cultural bias in your chosen group’s approach to global sustainability. [While the company seems to have a sustainable approach, different cultural perspectives may influence how the company addresses social responsibility, environmental impact assessments, and local community involvement. The role of cultural bias in a mining company’s approach to global sustainability can impact decisions related to environmental practices, community engagement, and ethical consideration.] Part Two: Profile Describe the value of sustainability practices in human and environmental systems. [In human systems, these practices contribute to long-term well-being by ensuring the responsible use of resources, reducing environmental impact, and promoting social equity. This initially leads to economic stability, job creation, and improved public health. In environmental systems, sustainability practices help preserve biodiversity, protect ecosystems, and maintain the balance of natural processes. By reducing pollution, conserving resources, and minimizing waste, sustainability contributes to the resilience of ecosystems and helps reduce the impact of human activities on the planet.

[McBurrow Mining employs their workers at a much higher rate than most big competitors and they also hired a new Director of Sustainability to help achieve their goal of being the primary sustainable mining company in the region while increasing revenue. Various stakeholders share the responsibility for ensuring proper practices in a mining company. Conflict resolution in mining practices is essential for supporting sustainability by addressing disputes among these stakeholders. This could include negotiating fair compensation, addressing environmental concerns, and ensuring local community involvement in decision-making processes.] Explain how cultural systems relate to sustainability within the profile. [Cultural systems within a mining company are interconnected with sustainability by their local community engagement. Understanding and respecting local cultural values is crucial for successful engagement with communities near mining sites. [Sustainability improvement is crucial when mining as the resources are limited but also necessary for humans to live and thrive in their environment. While it may be necessary, cautions still need to be taken to remain sustainable and keep the environmental footprint at a minimum. For McBurrow Mining to remain sustainable they need to keep waste at a minimum, continue maximizing the number of natural resources, and keep reducing negative disturbances so the land can recover after mining. This allows us to get the resources we need but also allowing environmental resilience.] Describe how the perspectives of the various stakeholders of your chosen group provide a context to improve sustainability practices related to the concerns of the group. [The perspectives of the various stakeholders ultimately determine the planning, policy making, and reclamation plan to remove footprints of land disturbances. Through proper planning and consultation with various stakeholders it’s possible to reduce or even eliminate mining footprints and to benefit society. The responsibility rests on all stakeholders as they need to work together and ensure that extraction of mineral resources is sustainable for many generations to come. They contribute to improving sustainability through addressing the local community’s concerns, compliance with
environmental regulations and safety standards, workplace safety for employees, and ecosystem preservation. By considering and integrating the diverse concerns and perspectives of these stakeholders, a mining company can develop comprehensive sustainability strategies.] Explain how cultural diversity in your chosen group can be of value in addressing sustainability issues. [Cultural diversity can bring significant value in addressing sustainability issues through many aspects. Diverse cultural backgrounds among employees can contribute a wealth of local knowledge about ecosystems, weather patterns, and sustainable resource use. Culturally diverse teams are better equipped to understand and engage with local communities. It also enhances the company’s capacity for innovation and creative problem-solving solutions. Being a culturally diverse group also improves communication skills within the company.] Describe actionable steps your chosen group could take for each pillar of sustainability. [The first pillar of sustainability is Economic, this pillar focuses on maintaining economic well-being. McBurrow Mining could ensure the economic well-being by keeping waste at a minimum and properly disposing of the waste to ensure that it does not lead to pollution. If waste is not disposed of properly, discharges of effluents could cause pollution into the environment. Another important step the company could take is ensuring that they have a good Mine closure plan in place to ensure the reclamation of the land. A good way to carry out the reclaim of the land is to engage and include the local community to turn the area into something that could benefit the community. The 2nd pillar of sustainability is Social, this pillar emphasizes the importance of social well-being, equity, and justice. This is where the company needs to engage and include the local community in decision making such as what to do with the reclaimed area after mining is complete. Another actionable step McBurrow Mining could take in ensuring social sustainability is to conduct regular community consultations to understand concerns and gather input. They could also prioritize local hiring to contribute to economic development of the surrounding area. The 3rd pillar of sustainability is Environmental, this pillar revolves around practices that aim to minimize the environmental impact of human activities. Some actionable steps the company could take to ensure sustainability is conduct Environmental Impact Assessments before and during the operations to identify potential environmental impacts. Implement water recycling and conservation to reduce the overall water footprint of mining activities. The company could invest in energy-efficient technologies and practices to reduce the carbon footprint. Developing comprehensive reclamation plans to restore mined areas to a natural and usable state after operations is also very vital in ensuring sustainability.]
