Answers 7.1 Describe the ways a business could use Value-stream mapping. What will be the benefits? - Companies will control waste in development processes, identify and predict supply chain bottlenecks, and improve customer value by providing services and products. - Value Stream Mapping helps to understand both current and visualize future state maps. - Value Stream Mapping enables decision-makers to link technical results to their corporate objectives. - Value Stream Mapping gives perspective for utilizing real-time data. - Supervision may decide more wisely and cut waste with this end-to-end visibility and a precise picture of lead and process times. 7.2 You are visiting a production plant that has achieved excellence and is a model site to benchmark in the industry. a) List what you are likely to see when visiting a lean plant. - Nike is a producer of athletic clothing and shoes over the world. Nike has merged with NGOs and manufacturers for sustainability issues. - By approaching lean manufacturing as a part of a sustainability initiative, the company reduced its production time and waste. - However, the factory productivity increased by 15 to 20 percent but the new product to the factory was reduced by 30 percent. - Nike introduced recycled waste using it in a form of footwear or clothing. Still, delivery times from factories were 30 percent slower. - With lean management, Nike has adopted “better manufacturing” and also changed its approach to a few targets, including business and marketing strategies. b) How will their current Value Stream look like? - Nike’s brand value is around 33 billion U.S dollars. So from the beginning up to till date, there are many factors and departments which are being changed and worked on. - Their management is divided into two parts support activities and primary activities. - Their main focus is on support activities which include technology development, human resources, and firm infrastructure. - After then comes primary activities in the role; logistics, operations, marketing, and sales. - Final stage is the margin and the investment in sustainability procedures will directly affect pricing and would burn the pants of customers for a good cause.
