IDENTIFYING HARDWARE COMPONENTS Identifying Hardware Components IT-FPX3280 Hardware and Oper System Admin Sydney Berglund Capella University John Champion November 2023
IDENTIFYING HARDWARE COMPONENTS The first hardware component is the power supply. According to Andrews, Dark and West (2022), “A computer power supply, also known as a power supply unit (PSU), is a box installed in a corner of the computer case that receives and converts the house current so that components inside the case can use it” (p.14). The power cables then connect the PSU to the motherboard to supply the power to it. The power supply unit gives a continual power supply which can protect the other sensitive components from overloading or becoming damaged. It is important to keep this area in the case free from dust and debris. You also want to make sure that before you begin your work whether it be with the power supply or just the hardware components in general you need to ground yourself. The next hardware component is the video card. Many people will use video card, graphics card, and graphics processing unit interchangeably but that is not accurate. According to Heatsink CPU Central Processing Unit RAM Floppy Disk Drive Hard Drive Optical CD/DVD Drive Motherboard Modem Sound Card Video Card Power supply Unit
IDENTIFYING HARDWARE COMPONENTS Moes (2023), “the graphics card is much like the motherboard, while the GPU is the actual processing unit”. The video or graphics cards are used to enhance the quality of the images and videos that are shown on the screen. This enhances the quality of the images and is integral in streaming videos, editing pictures, and graphics for games. If you want to upgrade or change your graphics card, then you need to make sure that you are putting the new card in the correct area in your case. Most graphics cards will need to be placed into a PCIe x16 slot. Also, when you are handling a graphics card you need to make sure that you are not touching the PCIe connector. The next component is the sound card. This is much like a video card but for sound instead of images. According to Moes (2023), “this hardware device is designed for a single specific purpose: processing sound”. Since this can become very complex that is why a separate piece of hardware. This card is needed especially for streaming music, playing sound on videos, and it also helps with the sounds that different computer functions make. The next component is the motherboard. According to Andrews, Dark, and West (2022), “is the largest and most important circuit board in the computer” (p.12). All hardware components must either be on the motherboard or connected to it. This is due to the fact that all of these components must interact with the CPU. As McKalin stated (2023), “protecting your motherboard should be a task of great importance”. The way to ensure your motherboard will continue to work properly is to dust the ventilators and get a surge protector. The final component is the central processing unit or CPU. According to Moes (2023), “the CPU is the brain of your computer. It’s a tiny chip with massive power that processes inbound and outbound commands”. The CPU is mounted inside a special socket on the motherboard. Since the CPU does need to remain cool, a fan and heatsink are typically placed on
