Chapter 4 Case Study
1.
What types of challenging behaviors are most common and what are the most
common causes in your experience?
Common challenging behaviors can vary it
depends on the context and individuals involved, but some of the most frequent
challenging behaviors across various settings and populations include:
1.
Aggression
2.
Noncompliance
3.
Self-injury
4.
Property Destruction
5.
Elopement (Wandering)
6.
Tantrums and Meltdowns
7.
Disruptive Behavior
8.
Attention-Seeking Behavior
9.
Repetitive Behaviors
The causes of these challenging behaviors can be complex and multifaceted, as mentioned in the
previous response. It's essential to approach individuals with challenging behaviors with
empathy and, when necessary, seek the assistance of professionals, such as psychologists or
behavioral therapists, to understand the specific causes and develop appropriate strategies for
support and intervention. The causes and approaches to addressing challenging behaviors can
vary widely based on individual circumstances.
The most common causes in my experience I
have seen is disruptive behavior and other behaviors I feel really bad for all the patients who
have to go through this. I feel that they should find a cure for these patients who have these
certain behaviors.
2.
Think of a resident who is exhibiting a challenging behavior right now. Have all
potential causes been explored? Can you convene a Solution Circle?
If I had a
resident who is exhibiting challenges behavior I would use all potential sources to help
that patient. I would set a plan for that patient and make sure there is a solution to the
problem. Be calm. Rather than getting furious, approach the situation with humor. Instead
of engaging in conflict, divert their attention. If there are other people there, let them
know that the behavior is not personal and is caused by the sickness. Talk to them in a
calm manner. If there is an obvious stressor in the area, such as a loud noise, attempt to
reduce it as much as you can to help the individual feel more at ease. Keep in mind that
difficult behaviors are communication in and of themselves.
