Weekly Assignment 6 1. Corn planting video: What were the monitors (various screens) in the tractor cab monitoring and what information did they relay to the farmer as he was planting? This is part of a precision ag system. a. There were three main monitors the farmer used in his tractor. First was the map monitor, this was used to see the areas that have and have not been planted yet. Using a color code system, this monitor also shows how much was planted in different sections of the farm. This monitor showed the field acres remaining, singulation percentage, population (k), down force (G.C. percentage and Margin pounds), and good ride percentage. The second screen he used was the demo for “AutoTrac Implement Guidance”, this was so the tractor would compensate for hills or uneven grounds. Finally was the screen monitoring the farming metrics. This mainly monitored fungicide (gal/ac), acres per hour, average spacing, and singulation percentage. 2. Corn Silage Harvest Video: Peterson Farms is in Kansas. Students that are from dairy farms are familiar with corn silage. For most students, corn silage is a new topic. When you watched the silage harvest video, tell me three key points that you learned. a. Silos are used to store fermented feed, silage. b. Silage is used as livestock feed, usually on dairy farms due to its high nutrients. c. When packing a bunker silo, the silage is not just thrown in. The silage is placed and then packed using a rig, this ensures good fermentation and preservation. 3. Soybean planting video: Soybeans were planted in late April. Soil temperatures were cool. How many acres did Lance say they were planting per hour with the planter shown in the drone footage? How many row planters is it? If they had a small 8 row planter would the time it takes to plant 3500 acres of soybeans change? a. There were 80 acres planted per hour with the planter shown in the drone footage, this planter is a 48 row planter. If they had a small 8 row planter the time it takes to plant 3500 acres of soybeans would significantly change.
4. Soybean Harvest in MI: Isley Farms. In the soybean harvest video, Jake talked about precision ag on their farm and improving farm sustainability. What were a few of his comments that you thought were important? a. They track what areas on the field can produce more, and therefore feed them more and give them better input to produce a better crop. b. The areas that are known for producing less, due to lack of moisture or soil quality, can get their nutrients back. This ensures that no over fertilizing occurs on the field and therefore reduces waste. 5. Soybean t ZFS -Ithaca . This is a new facility that recently opened in Michigan. The company is based out of Zeeland, MI on the west side of Michigan. What did ZFS say they do with the soybeans that are brought there? a. ZFS -Ithaca is now the largest soybean processor in the state. ZFS says that a lot of the soybeans go to Zeeland to be further refined into food grade oil. The soybeans are also used as a filler for cattle feed, soybean meal for protein, and crude soybean oil.
