Measurement and Uncertainty Part 1 - Exploration, Measurement, & Analysis Exploration - How accurately can you measure with a meter stick? Length of the dune buggy L= 16.6 cm ± 0.15 cm L=16.59 cm ± 0.18 cm Length (cm) Differences 16.5 cm 0.1 cm 16.3 cm 0.3 cm 16.7 cm 0.1 cm 16.7 cm 0.1 cm Average: 16.6 cm 0.6 /4= 0.15 cm Length (cm) Differences 16.52 cm 0.07 cm 16.31 cm 0.28 cm 16.79 cm 0.20 cm 16.75 cm 0.16 cm Average: 16.59 cm 0.71/4= 0.18 cm
We decided to add the estimation digit to our measurements to make our averages 0.01 off from each other. The histogram looks very similar on both. Measurement - Motion is this experiment is the buggy moving forward in this case. If it changes, Why? How? - The placement of the wheels on the track. If the wheels are on the tape measure it could affect how fast the buggy moves to get to the finish line. - As well as our reaction times when hitting start and stop watching the buggy hit the wall at the finish. Graph speed measurements Calculate the mean and average deviation of your measurement Distance (allowed to go to) Time to reach the finish Differences 100 cm 2.57 s 0.01 s 100 cm 2.69 s 0.13 s 100 cm 2.57 s 0.01 s 100 cm 2.48 s 0.08 s Average : 100 cm 2.56 s 0.22 s Velocity = 100 cm/ 2.56 s = 39.06 cm/s
