Community Service/Field Experience Reflection
Reflective Report 1: Section A

Organization: Oxbow Meadows overarching mission is to inspire and empower people of all ages to “actively engage with their environment for continued learning”. The center offers a range of activities and classes. The site has walking trails and many animals. They also offer weekly Nature Play sessions where volunteers model playing in nature with families. The center strives to be a community leader in environmental education as well as a representative for sustainability practices. Their values follow the acronym GREEN which stands for: grow, relationships, education, engagement, and nature.
Reason for Choosing this Organization
: Growing up in the Columbus area, Oxbow Meadows was a staple of my childhood. I spent many spring breaks and summer days exploring the trails on their site. As a child,
I used to love the activities they offered that taught about nature and animals. For this reason, I have chosen Oxbow to complete my hours. I want to give children the same joy and wonder that I experienced and still hold near and dear to my heart. Although I am not a science education major, Oxbow uses many out of the box teaching strategies that engage learners of all ages. I am excited to take these strategies back and use them in my future classroom to hopefully engage my students and teach them the fun in learning.
Pre-Reflections: I have volunteered in the past for both Girl and Boy Scout troops. These organizations are like Oxbow in that they encourage children to explore their passions while emphasizing the importance of nature and the preservation of it. Both organizations, much like state parks, emphasize leave no trace and how to respectfully camp and hike.
From my experience at Oxbow, I hope to gain a deeper understanding of how to engage young learners through hands on activities. I also hope to gain a better understanding of how young learners think and learn.
