The Soviet Union and the United States became rivals in an arms race. Rocket technology had driven modern warfare to new heights in World War II, resulting in the Soviet Union and United States going to head-to-head in a race to show who had the most superior technology. As more powerful technological advancements were developed by both superpowers, the arms race developed into the Space Race. The Space Race changed America’s view of what the phrase “Superpower” meant. Putting a man on the moon allowed America to win the Space Race and fully established their right as the world's biggest Superpower. President Kennedy gave a speech at Rice University in 1962 pertaining to the Space Race. In his speech he stated,
“
Man and his quest for knowledge and progress is determined and cannot be deterred. The exploration of space will go ahead, whether we join in it or not. And it is one of the greatest adventures of all time. And no nation which expects to be the leader of other nations can expect to stay behind in this race for space
.” 1
The accomplishment of being able to explore space called for prompt advancements and improvements in areas of study such as computer science, microtechnology, solar power, and telecommunications. Thesis: The Space Race ushered in a new way of thinking in America society bringing about major changes to our education system, healthcare, military as well as a need for more rapid technological advancements.
