Many education leaders would agree that technology innovation continues to drive new ideas within educational systems (Moore & Diehl, 2018). Educational systems are responding to workforce needs to prepare their students to be successful for the future (Moore & Diehl, 2018). Rogers (2003) discusses that not everyone will buy into innovative ideas right away. For this discussion you will need to provide two key points and two challenges to consider when helping a system bridge the gap with technology initiatives. You will also need to discuss why you believe helping people bridge the gap is important from a Biblical perspective. Innovation in education is necessary because trends and technology are always changing. Working in the medical education field for 10+ years, I have seen a lot of hesitancy over the years when introducing innovation to faculty and educators. One statement that stuck out to me is an innovation may have been invented a long time ago, but if someone perceives it as new, it may be an innovation for them (Sahin, I., 2006). That statement makes a lot of sense and I had never really thought about it that way when working with faculty. Uncertainty is one of the challenges when introducing innovation especially if someone isn’t as comfortable with technology. Uncertainty of new technologies or initiatives can cause tension instead of opportunities if not introduced correctly (K..Smith, W., 2017). The how-to-knowledge is another challenge as many faculty which is similar to uncertainty with the technology but also time must be given for faculty to test, learn, and use the technology to fully assess if the technology will work for their classroom. Taking the time to learn and test the technology will help you discover if the technology is meeting your needs. A key point to remember is communication. Staff who are affected as well as students must know if a new technology is being considered or adopted and not find out at the last minute. Staff needs to be involved from the beginning because if they have a say in what is being adopted, they are more likely to back the change if they feel like they have a voice. Observability and trial periods are key in implementing new technology. If staff or faculty are able to see and try the technology, they are less likely to be hesitant in using it. 2 Timothy 2:2 (NIV) states: “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.” Through God, we must be able to show others a way to make processes better for the benefit of all involved. With proper communication and showing faculty how new technologies or initiatives will enhance their practice we are bridging the gap to provides better service to students. Support of faculty and staff is also essential to understand how and way this technology will make what they do more meaningful.
