HIS 100 Module One Activity Template: Project Topic Exploration You must pick a topic from the Research Topics Lists in the Library Research Guide. While it is a good idea to choose your topic early, you may change it until the next module. Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Support your responses with specific details and examples. Identify the topic you chose to explore: Haitian Independence Explain what you already know about the chosen topic based on your personal history or experiences. Haitian independence is very new to me. I have had friends from Haiti, and they have never spoken about what happened in their birthplace. I am interested in knowing more about what events led up to their independence and what has become of the country now. How long did they struggle to gain their independence? Did they have any allies on their side while fighting for their independence? What year did they finally gain their independence? Describe the beliefs, assumptions, and values you have related to the topic you chose. I chose this topic because I felt it related to the United States and its independence. Every country should have the opportunity to free itself from whatever hold they have. Reading a little into the topic, I read that a freed slave was the one who fought for Haiti’s independence from France. The assumption I had of Haiti was that they were an independent nation, but reading more into the topic has taught me that they were not always independent. Explain why this topic is relevant to current events or to modern society. This topic is relevant to current events or modern society because it shows us that when a group of determined people get together and fight for what they believe in, there is justice. It gives hope to new generations by being able to look back in time and say ‘if they did it, so can we’. 1
