Compare the narratives presented in your primary and secondary sources relevant to your historical event.
The narratives in all four sources are about how Haiti gained its independence. One of the primary sources contains the real constitution of Haiti from 1801 and the other primary source is a speech that Dessalines gave after the independence of Haiti. The secondary sources consist of an article written 10 years after Haiti’s independence and the other source is an article that highlights Toussaint’s early years and what Haiti did to change history. All the articles are biased,
in my opinion. They all only state the good that has come from Haitian Independence and what changed history. “
Haiti also started the path of solidarity between movements for independence.” (Fuertes, 2010). None of the articles are against Haiti. The perspective from the primary sources is each from a historical figure during the Haitian Revolution. The perspectives from the secondary sources are from people who have studied the Haitian Revolution and appreciate what was done for Haiti’s freedom. During the Haitian Revolution, there were also other events taking place, such as, Thomas Jefferson taking his seat in office as the 3
rd
president of the United States. In 1803, Jefferson doubled the size of the US by buying Louisiana from France. In 1804 the very first full-size railway steam locomotive was built and fully functioning. Describe one narrative that has significantly influenced the contemporary understanding of your historical event.
The narrative I chose that has significantly influenced the contemporary understanding of my historical event is the narrative from the article by Jeremy D. Popkin. He goes into some detail about Toussaint's life and why he chose to rise and lead Haiti to freedom. Reading about this narrative helped me put into perspective what went on during the fight for freedom. Explain how the chosen narrative helps you better understand your historical research question. Please provide your revised research question and then explain how the chosen narrative helps you better understand your historical event.
How did the Haitian Revolution affect the political movement in Haiti and around the world?
The chosen narrative helps me better understand my historical research question by being detailed about Toussaint’s life and the events leading up to Haiti’s freedom. The article goes into
detail about people who were involved and mentioned while the revolution was taking place.
