HIS 100 Module One Activity Template: Project Topic Exploration
You must pick a topic from the Research Topics Lists in the Library Research Guide. While it is a good idea to choose your topic early, you may change it until the next module. Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Support your responses with specific details and examples.
Identify the topic you chose to explore: For this week’s assignment, I have chosen the topic of The Creation of Earth Day to further research and explore.
Explain what you already know about the chosen topic based on your personal history or experiences.
I can proudly state that I would classify myself as a concerned and aware environmentalist. I am constantly finding myself consumed with worry about the future of our planet and how we have so carelessly contributed to the earth’s accelerated deterioration. Because I do my very best to be present and conscious regarding environmental issues, I already have a fair amount of knowledge and understanding about the inception of what we now know as “Earth Day”, and this annual observance entails.
Back in the start of 1969, a massive oil spill occurred off the coast of Santa Barbara California which poured over 3 million gallons of crude oil into the ocean and killed tens of thousands of sea mammals and sea birds. Earth day was essentially born from this event as a means of protest and an attempt to bring awareness to environmental issues this country was beginning to face. On April 22
nd
, 1970, the first
official Earth Day was held and until this day, the single largest organized protest occurred in tandem 1
with the inception of Earth Day. Additionally, the world-wide recognizable recycling symbol was also created and presented on the first official earth day as well. The recycling symbol is a Möbius strip which is typically seen in the field of mathematics and is one flat, continuous, single strip which is mostly used in the application sense of engineering, design, and architecture. Describe the beliefs, assumptions, and values you have related to the topic you chose. The beliefs I have in relation to my chosen topic of Earth Day, mostly center around how important this annual event is. I personally believe that it is just not enough to simply have only a single recognized day
where we pivot our focus to the countless environmental issues our planet is facing. I cannot readily conjure up any known assumptions that I personally possess regarding Earth Day.
My values, however, very much reflect the spirt of Earth Day and the messages of solidarity and consciousness that it was originally born from. My values as a human being who walks this planet just as any other, are those that do my very utmost to be as environmentally conscious in his everyday life, whether I am alone or amongst others. Explain why this topic is relevant to current events or to modern society. This topic is crucially relevant to today’s modern-day society. We are living in a time where most people are plagued by a consumerist mentality, and for the most part remain ignorant or choose to simply not acknowledge the part that every one of us plays in the further destruction of our planet. We consume at
a rate that is beyond alarming, our greed is causing unparalleled consequences to our atmosphere and our planets ecosystems. We are rapidly killing off hundreds of species of living beings each year. Our air is consumed with toxic gases that mankind is largely responsible form, and our earth’s ocean temperatures have been steadily rising at a rate in which expert scientists deem as an “unprecedented 2
event” (The Guardian, 2023). One of the most concerning parts of this is that our planets oceans are widely known to act as an absorbing agent for our atmosphere’s carbon dioxide, which scientists have stated can absorb up to 90% of the atmosphere’s Co2 at any given moment. Experts are now very concerned that the rapid increase of our ocean’s temperatures could in fact indicate that our oceans have reached their capacity to absorb and store atmospheric gases (The Guardian, 2023). The bottom line is that we as a species are not becoming more eco-conscious as time passes, but in fact are proving to act in increasingly careless ways which are proving to be destructive and detrimental to our planet and our environment. Therefore, this topic is wholly relevant, more so now that ever.
