.
Identify author and describe potential
biases.
Zhikai Dong is a researcher at the Institute of Economics of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). She is also an
Honorary President of the Association of Chinese Economic History and is the Director Research Center of Modern
Chinese Economic History, CASS. She doesn’t appear to show any bias from what I saw, she is basing everything off the
standpoint that thanks to Mao Zedong, the economy and industries within China grew to be the power houses that
they are today.
Identify thesis and arguments.
The thesis is stated as, “Such an industrial and national economic system is the outcome of the efforts of Mao and the
communist party and the government led by him. The successes and failures of those efforts clearly reflect features of
this particular time” This shows that Zhikai Dong’s argument is that thanks to the efforts of Mao Zedong, the country
of China became what it is today, a force to be reckoned with, one of the powerhouses of Earth.
What primary sources did the source
rely on?
She used several sources that are in volumes of the work of Mao Zedong. She has previous knowledge of this because
she also cited one of her own workings where she worked with a co-author. For her 17 paged article, she uses about
23 different sources that all seem to be heavily reliable sources.
Is the source reliable and convincing?
Why or why not?
The source does seem to be very reliable in the sense the Zhikai Dong is making very educated statements that have
facts to back them, her credentials are heavily reliable along with her high work ethic. She does not seem like the type
of person to do things part way.
How does the source relate to your
project topic? How does it add to what
you already know about the topic?
This source relates to my project topic because I want to know how Mao Zedong changed China for better or worse, if
he improved the economic state of China. I wanted to know what type of impact Mao Zedong had on the people of
China and its economy and culture.
