Peschong 1 Morgan Peschong Justin Davis HUM1023C00 May 4, 2023 Native Americans had a deep spiritual connection to the land and saw the land as a collective resource to be shared among the tribe. They believed that the land belonged to everyone and should never be sold or taken away. The settlers, on the other hand, had a different view of land ownership. To them, the land was a commodity and could be bought, sold, and divided. This fundamental difference in views on land ownership created tension and conflict between the settlers and Native Americans (Admin, n.d.). The settlers sought to acquire land and the Native Americans sought to protect it (Admin, n.d.). To Europeans, land was something to be owned, controlled, and divided up. Native Americans, land was something to be shared, respected, and cared for. This difference in views about land use resulted in a clash between Indigenous peoples and settlers. With Native Americans often having to fight to keep their lands or seek permission to use them (Removing Native Americans From Their Land | Native American | Immigration and Relocation in U.S. History | Classroom Materials at the Library of Congress | Library of Congress, n.d.). The Dutch viewed land as something to own, while Native people viewed it as something to use and share. The Dutch also had more advanced technology, which allowed them to dispossess Native people of their land more easily. As a result, Native people were often forced to relocate or face the threat of violence. This created a great deal of tension between Native and Dutch people, which would eventually lead to conflicts (Native Americans in Colonial America, n.d.).
Peschong 2 The Europeans viewed land as a commodity that could be owned by individuals and traded, whereas Native Americans did not share this view. When they sold land, they believed they were only selling the right to use it and did not give up their right to occupy it. The sale of Manhattan Island to the Dutch for sixty guilders is not as impressive as it seems. Because, the Native Americans likely intended to lease the land to the for Dutch use while continuing to occupy it themselves. The clash in beliefs over land ownership between Europeans and Native Americans was a major source of conflict during the age of exploration and colonization. It has continued to be an issue in many parts of the world, even in today.
