PRIMARY SOURCE ANALYSIS
4.5: Maritime Empires Maintained and Developed
Directions:
Read the excerpt below and answer the following prompts in complete
sentences.
"The commercial and political effects of these events [exploration] have been immense.
They have led to the establishment of European colonies in America and Asia, and to the
development of extensive trading networks and empires. They have also led to the rise
of mercantilism, an economic theory which holds that a nation's wealth is determined by
its accumulation of precious metals and its balance of trade.
Mercantilism led to a series of conflicts among European nations, as each sought to gain
a larger share of global trade and wealth. This competition led to wars, treaties, and
diplomatic alliances, and eventually to the rise of modern nation-states. The impact of
mercantilism on European conflict during this period cannot be overstated, as it was a
primary driver of political and military actions among European powers."
