Module 1 Short Responses – Question 1
In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you think so?
The influx of unskilled Irish immigrants into New York City in the 1840s and early 1850s
drives down wages for other workers at the low end of the salary ladder.
Given that this insert talks about historical economic issues, I think economic history pertains
to it. Unskilled workers would labor for less money when they came to the US, which led to
unemployment for low-wage Americans.
Module 1 Short Responses – Question 2
In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you think so?
In 1908 Aram Pothier, an immigrant from Quebec, is elected governor of Rhode Island with
strong support from the Québécois community.
Given Pothier's impact on Rhode Island's electorate, I think political history applies to this
insert. Quebeciois are more likely to participate in politics as a result of immigration.
Module 1 Short Responses – Question 3
In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you think so?
Irish immigrants and first-generation Irish-Americans come to dominate the hierarchy of the
American Catholic Church in the late 19th century.
Social history is the historical lens being used to examine this situation. Since the Social
History lens is used to study social structures or historical processes, this is the lens that is
being used. Given that Catholicism is the most common religion in Ireland, the large influx of
Irish immigrants to the United States explain why the American Catholic Church is currently
dominated by them.
Module 1 Short Responses – Question 4
In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you think so?
Immigration to the United States comes to be seen as a "rite of passage" for young
Québécois women in the early 20th century.
Here, social history is being used as the historical lens. The social structures and processes, as
well as the more general conditions that prevailed in an entire society at a specific time in
history, are defined as part of the social history lens. This term closely relates to the women
of Québécoise. It is relevant in this instance because the example focuses on a specific period
of history in the 20th century and because meeting the requirement of moving to the United
States satisfies the requirements of the "rite of passage”, this appeals to the Social History
lens.
Module 1 Short Responses – Question 5
If you had to write a paper on the Lincoln assassination, what would you like to know
more about? Create three research questions that would be appropriate for a historical
analysis essay, keeping in mind the characteristics of a critical research question. The
three questions can be related, or they can address different aspects of the topic.
1. How did northern and southern states respond to Lincoln's passing differently in the
months that followed?
2. Did major changes in economic structures or procedures occur before or after Lincoln's
death?
3. Why would Confederate leaders want to kill Lincoln, both politically and economically?
Module 1 Short Responses – Question 6
If you had to write a paper on Title IX, what would you like to know more about?
