HIS 100 Module Five Activity Template: Historical Interpretations
Replace the bracketed text below with your responses.
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
•
Chernobyl
Describe how exploring your research question improved your understanding of the historical roots of
your current event.
What were the initial environmental consequences of the Chernobyl disaster and how does it
influence our take on using nuclear energy for good environmental uses?
•
Exploring my research question improved my understanding of the historical roots of my current
event by helping me grasp the possible positives and negatives of using nuclear energy and how
nuclear energy has been used previously. It has also helped me understand what the
environmental consequences could be and what actions would be taken to handle these kinds
of events. It has also shown me what has led to the development of the idea of how nuclear
energy could be used for good environmental uses. Nuclear power and hydropower are crucial
for low-carbon electricity generation, accounting for three-quarters of global production.
Nuclear power has reduced CO2 emissions by over 60 gigatonnes over the past 50 years. Today,
it contributes 10% of global electricity supply, ensuring stability and reducing dependence on
imported fuels as variable renewables increase. (

Explain how biased perspectives influence what is known about both your historical and current events.
•
Due to its low greenhouse gas emissions and little health risks during normal operation, experts
are increasingly embracing nuclear power as a method to address climate change. However, in
many nations, the public is more hesitant about nuclear power, exaggerating its harmful impacts
on health and the environment. This discrepancy could be explained by the behavioral immune
system, which protects against pathogens by making people aware of their dangers. (Hacquin et
al., 2022). The bias formed around nuclear energy is not always something that people are
aware they hold a bias against and generally seems to come from misinformation or from the
general fear surrounding nuclear energy.
•
The Chernobyl tragedy resulted in an overestimation of its medical implications, owing mostly to
anti-nuclear sentiments among green movement supporters. The disaster hampered the
development of the worldwide atomic industry, and nonrenewable fossil fuels became
increasingly expensive, adding to poverty. Nuclear energy requires an effective international
executive to build power stations in appropriate sites, avoiding mishaps like those in Japan in
2011. (Jargin, 2012).
Propose how the narrative about your historical event might change if it were told from a missing
perspective.
•
The narrative about my event might change if it were told from a missing perspective by giving
more context to what exactly happened on the day of the event. The missing perspective I
believe is from those who were working that day and from the family of those who were there
that day on sight as everything went down. Having that context, it might give people a better
idea of what happened and might change how people think about nuclear energy as a whole.
Propose how the narrative about your current event might change if it were told from a missing
perspective.
•
If more was known about nuclear energy and the details about what happened at the disasters
more people might be more accepting of the idea of what using nuclear energy would do for the
world. Having spread misinformation about the damage caused from nuclear energy it has
caused fear to be the main bias against using nuclear energy. I think if more details about
exactly what happened and the damage that has been caused then it would be less of a scary
word to hear nuclear energy and the idea that using nuclear energy would be beneficial in the
event of improving the environment by primarily lowering carbon dioxide emissions.
