HIS 100 Project
Part 1: Creating a Research Question
1.
Describe how your assumptions, beliefs, and values influenced your choice of topic.
•
My assumptions, beliefs, and values influenced my choice of topic by my interest in the
environment and the effects that human disasters have on the environment.
2.
Discuss the significance of your historical research question in relation to your current event.
•
The significance of my historical research question in relation to the Chernobyl disaster is
to understand the effects of the disaster has had on the environment both initially and
over time and to understand what it has taught global agencies about nuclear energy and
its uses.
3.
Explain how you used sources to finalize your research question.
•
I used sources to see if I was even able to have evidence for my research question so to
ensure that it was researchable. I also used sources to help with understanding the
timeline from the Chernobyl disaster to the use of nuclear energy sources today and what
kind of evidence is being used.
Part 2: Building Context to Address Questions
1.
Describe the context of your historical event that influenced your current event.
•
The context of all the things that went wrong during the Chernobyl disaster has been
taken into consideration on the usage of all nuclear energy moving forward. All
prevention measures that were put in place after the disaster and that have been updated
throughout the years are still important with the use of nuclear energy and learning more
about its uses.
2.
Describe a historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event.
2
•
The National Nuclear Safety Council is a historical group that was part of the
participation of handling matters that dealt with the fallout from the disaster and was part
is still part of how to handle nuclear energy moving forward.
3.
Explain the historical figure
or group’s
motivation to participate in your historical event.
•
“The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) was created as an independent agency
by Congress in 1974 to ensure the safe use of radioactive materials for beneficial civilian
purposes while protecting people and the environment. The NRC regulates commercial
nuclear power plants and other uses of nuclear materials, such as in nuclear medicine,
through licensing, inspection and enforcement of its requirements.” (
About NRC
, n.d.).
This shows how they played a major part during the disaster event of Chernobyl and why
they are still so important in maintaining the safety levels regarding all other nuclear sites
and materials. Other motivations the group participated in Chernobyl was to provide a
platform to exchange information about general nuclear safety issues that was important
internationally, identify any current nuclear safety issues and give advice on said safety
issues with an exchange of information or to provide additional efforts, and to formulate
commonly shared safety concepts. (International Nuclear Safety Advisory Group -
Vienna, 1992).
Part 3: Examining How Bias Impacts Narrative
1.
Describe a narrative you identified while researching the history of your historical event.
•
A narrative that significantly influenced the contemporary understanding of the
Chernobyl disaster would be that of having the questions that many people answered
displayed in a way that makes it easier to understand details about the incident with using
diction that can be better understood by those not well versed in the science diction for
nuclear energy and radiation. The chosen narrative gives me a better understanding of the
3
entire event and details that relate to multiple facets of what was affected and is still
affected to this day. It also helps with giving a better understanding of how the event was
handled and why it was handled in such a way.
2.
Articulate how biased perspectives presented in primary and secondary sources influence what
is known or unknown about history.
•
Biased perspectives presented in primary and secondary sources influence what is known
and unknown about history due to what type of information is given. The bias presented
gives us an idea of what the thinking of some of the people was like and possibly why
which gives more insight into details about that person's kind of life. It can also leave out
other perspectives that may not be found elsewhere. Some information could just be left
out altogether to benefit the person's bias further.
3.
Identify the perspectives that you think are missing from
your historical event’s
narrative.
•
Perspectives missing from the narrative I think would be from the workers and families
of those that died from the event and not just encounters from the aftermath of the event.
It seems that many perspectives are more focused on what happened after and the effects
rather than from firsthand encounters and eye-witness accounts.
Part 4: Connecting the Past with the Present
1.
Explain how researching its historical roots helped improve your understanding of your current
event.
•
Exploring my research question improved my understanding of the historical roots of my
current event by helping me grasp the possible positives and negatives of using nuclear
energy and how nuclear energy has been used previously. It has also helped me
understand what the environmental consequences could be and what actions would be
taken to handle these kinds of events. It has also shown me what has led to the

development of the idea of how nuclear energy could be used for good environmental
uses. Nuclear power and hydropower are crucial for low-carbon electricity generation,
accounting for three-quarters of global production. Nuclear power has reduced CO2
emissions by over 60 gigatonnes over the past 50 years. Today, it contributes 10% of
global electricity supply, ensuring stability and reducing dependence on imported fuels as
variable renewables increase. (

IEA
, n.d.).
2.
Articulate how questioning your assumptions, beliefs, and values may benefit you as an
individual.
•
Regularly questioning my assumptions, beliefs, and values is important especially when coming
across new information as it is a way to keep an open mind and to stay up to date. Plus, it keeps
you informed about yourself as a person and what your morals and ideals are as they can
change over time. Keeping in line with your values is important to stay on the track you want to
be on in life.
3.
Discuss how being a more historically informed citizen may help you understand contemporary
issues.
•
Citizens, including those eligible to vote and actively involved in the community, should
be historically informed about the government and community history to make informed
decisions about events and issues. Accurate and accessible resources should be taught
during school years. Being historically informed helps individuals understand their
actions' consequences and future impact. Climate change, a major issue in southern
Illinois, and all over the world, affects the environment, farming, and food.
Understanding the evolution of climate change and its impact on people can change
people's views on the issue and therefore change how they choose to vote in important
5
elections. Educating people about historical and current research is crucial for addressing
climate change, which is one of the biggest contemporary challenges today.
