HIS 100 Module One Activity Template: Project Topic Exploration
You must pick a topic from the Research Topics Lists in the Library Research Guide. While it is a good idea
to choose your topic early, you may change it until the next module. Replace the bracketed text below
with your responses. Support your responses with specific details and examples.
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
I chose climate change and environmental issues as the topic to explore.
Explain what you already know about the chosen topic based on your personal history or experiences.
Regarding climate change, I know governments from first-world countries are attempting to
reduce their carbon footprint. Climate change is a shift in global weather patterns, affecting the
environment and human society. It is primarily caused by human activities, such as burning fossil
fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes, which release large amounts of greenhouse gases
into the atmosphere.
o
The gases trap heat from the sun, leading to increased global temperatures, rising sea
levels, and extreme weather events.
When it comes to environmental issues, I know that it encompasses a broader range of concerns
about the health and well-being of the natural world and how human activities impact it. These
include the pollution of water and air, biodiversity loss, and the destruction of habitats. These
issues have some severe consequences for not only human health but the health of the
environment as well. Addressing these issues requires a strong effort from organizations and
individuals.
When it comes to my history and experience with climate and environmental issues, I
experienced it when I resided in Arizona. During the daytime, it would be anywhere from the
high 60s to triple digits; at night, it would drop roughly to the low 60s to the high 50s’. However,
during my third year of living there, the temperature had increased, causing the already dry
climate to become even dryer. Additionally, during the winter, the temperature had dropped to
the mid-20s to the low 30s, followed by heavy snow. This significant drop in temperature caused
the damage or death of desert life, both animals and plants. Seeing this for me was saddening as
I cherish the life of the natural environment. My belief in climate change was reinforced and
inspired me to research ways to reduce my carbon footprint.
Describe the beliefs, assumptions, and values you have related to the topic you chose.
I believe that climate change is a real and pressing issue requiring immediate action from
individuals, governments, and corporations alike. I assume that human activity, notably the
burning of fossil fuels, significantly contributes to climate change. I value the protection of the
environment and the preservation of natural resources for future generations. It is important to
me that we take steps to reduce our carbon footprint, promote sustainability, and prioritize the
health of our planet over short-term economic gain.
Explain why this topic is relevant to current events or to modern society.
Climate change and environmental issues are highly relevant to modern society as they have
become a pressing concern and a topic of global discussion. With the increasing frequency of
natural disasters, rising sea levels, and extreme weather conditions, the impact of climate
change is being felt more acutely than ever before. In addition to the potential loss of life and

property damage, climate change has far-reaching economic and social implications. It affects
industries such as agriculture, tourism, and energy and can lead to job losses, food shortages,
and displacement of people. Furthermore, environmental issues such as pollution, deforestation,
and loss of biodiversity can lead to long-term adverse effects on the health and well-being of
individuals and communities. Therefore, addressing these issues has become a top priority for
governments, organizations, and individuals worldwide.
