HIS 100 Module Two Activity Template: Primary and Secondary Sources Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Non-graded portion : List your historical research topic here: o Climate Change and Environmental Issues o Chernobyl Graded portion: Distinguish between primary and secondary sources. Primary sources are original materials or documents that provide firsthand evidence or direct testimony. Examples of primary sources include diaries, letters, photographs, government documents, and artifacts. Secondary sources are interpretations or analyses of primary sources written or created after an event. Examples of secondary sources include textbooks, biographies, reviews, and articles written by historians or scholars. Explain why it is important to consult a variety of sources when conducting historical research. Include specific details and examples. When conducting historical research, it is crucial to consult a wide range of sources to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the topic. Relying on a single source may result in an incomplete or biased understanding of the event. By examining a variety of primary sources such as eyewitness accounts, photographs, and official documents, as well as secondary sources such as academic journals, newspaper articles, and historical analyses, one can gain insights into different perspectives and uncover previously unknown information. Consulting multiple sources can also help identify inconsistencies or contradictions in the evidence, leading to further investigation and a deeper understanding of the topic. For instance, if one source claims that an event had a particular outcome, while another source contradicts this claim, it is essential to investigate both sources further to determine which one is more credible. Furthermore, examining different sources can help historians understand the historical significance of the event, including its causes and effects. By studying various primary and secondary sources, historians can piece together a more detailed and accurate account of the event, which can help shed light on its broader historical context and significance. Therefore, it is crucial to consult a wide range of sources when conducting historical research to ensure a comprehensive and accurate understanding of the event. Identify one primary source that would help investigate your research question (include the title, author, and link to the source). One Primary source that will help me investigate my scientific question is the government document listed below. o Title : A preliminary assessment of the radiological impact of the Chernobyl reactor accident on the population of the European Community 1
o Authors : Morrey, M., Brown, J., Williams, J.A., Crick, M.J., Simmonds, J.R., Hill, M.D. o Link : http://aei.pitt.edu/35710/1/A1962.pdf Identify one secondary source that would help investigate your research question (include the title, author, and link to the source). One Secondary source that will help me investigate my scientific question is the academic journal listed below. o Title : Iodine deficiency in soils and evaluation of its impact on thyroid gland diseases in areas subjected to contamination after the Chernobyl accident o Authors : Korobova, E.M., Romanov, S.L., Silenok, A.V., Kurnosova, I.V., Chesalova, E.I., Beriozkin, V.Yu o Link : https://resolver-ebscohost-com.ezproxy.snhu.edu/openurl? sid=EBSCO:edselp&genre=article&issn=03756742&ISBN=&volume=142&issue=&date=2 0140701&spage=82&pages=82-93&title=Journal%20of%20Geochemical %20Exploration&atitle=Iodine%20deficiency%20in%20soils%20and%20evaluation%20of %20its%20impact%20on%20thyroid%20gland%20diseases%20in%20areas%20subjected %20to%20contamination%20after%20the%20Chernobyl%20accident&aulast=Korobova %2C%20E.M.&id=DOI:10.1016/j.gexplo.2014.02.028 Choose a current event related to the subject of your historical research question and explain how they are connected. There are ongoing forest fires in the exclusion zone surrounding the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which is relevant to my research question on history. These fires have been burning since April 2020 and have released significant amounts of radioactive particles into the atmosphere, posing a threat to the health of residents and wildlife. A man was taken into custody for allegedly starting the fires, which caused “radiation levels to spike to 16 times above normal”. A large percentage of these fires were put out, but some are still ongoing, and with the Russian occupation and war with Ukraine and Russia, it is becoming more difficult to suppress them. Climate scientists have pointed out that such disasters are partly due to global warming. Due to the high risk of wildfires in the forested areas around Chernobyl, a significant blaze could likely occur. If such a fire were to break out today, research from approximately one to two years ago suggests that the “smoke from the fire could carry radioactive material.” The ongoing forest fires in the exclusion zone surrounding the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant not only pose a threat to the health of residents and wildlife but also highlight the impact of global warming on the environment. Climate scientists have noted that such disasters are partly due to the increase in temperature and the changing weather patterns caused by climate change. As the temperatures continue to rise, the risk of wildfires in the forested areas around Chernobyl is likely to increase, and it is vital to take necessary measures to prevent such fires. The release of radioactive particles into the atmosphere due to these fires is a significant concern, and it is essential to address the root cause of these disasters by implementing measures to combat climate change and promoting sustainable practices. 2
