A.
There were several causes of the Great Depression.
There was somewhat of a domino effect.
The Dust Bowl, which was a drought, had a huge effect on farmers. Crops and animals died and farmers
could not afford to maintain their farms. This was one of the major causes of the Depression.
Another cause was the stock market crash of 1929. In just one day, Wall Street lost $14 billion. This
caused banks to close because people withdrew all their funds. Loans became unavailable. Many jobs
disappeared. People began to lose their homes and the ability to care for themselves(Norton, 2015).
B. Roosevelt’s New Deal tried to address the problems of the Great Depression in several ways.
The National Industrial Recovery Act, or NIRA, created codes for business industries to compete fairly.
These codes reinforced that workers had the right to establish unions, along with setting production
limits, wages, and more. They regulated working conditions and prohibited unfair competitive practices
and price-cutting. This allowed businesses in competition to come together to establish wages and prices
in their respective industries. The idea was to stabilize pay and prices to increase consumer spending and
allow for job creation. However, participation in NIRA was voluntary(Norton, 2015).
The New Deal had relief programs for the poor. In 1935, there was $3 billion in federal aid set aside.
Since New Deal advocates were opposed to direct relief payments, work relief programs were created.
One of these was the Civilian Conservation Corps, or CCC. The CCC paid young single men a dollar a day
to labor outdoors. Their jobs included building reservoirs and dams, trail creation in national parks, and
other needs of the government.
The Emergency Banking Relief Bill was introduced to give the government authority to reopen banks. In
order to promote the use of these banks, President Roosevelt went on the radio and asked the public to
begin depositing their money again. (Norton, 2015)

1. The arms race between the Soviet Union and the United States of America began because of
America’s use of atomic bombs. This increased Soviet interest in nuclear weapons and caused tension
between the two nations. America’s reluctance to share technology or allow the Soviet Union to gain
nuclear weapons caused mistrust contributing to the Cold War tensions(Norton,2015).
2. Another contributing factor to the Cold War tensions was ideological difference between the United
States and the Soviet Union. The United States was (and is) a capitalist nation while the Soviet Union was
communist. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was created to prevent the spread of
communism(Norton,2015).
3.
Cold War tensions had an effect on American culture and domestic policies. It created a culture of
fear. Born of this fear were fall-out shelters and nuclear drills in school. The government created security
organizations like the NSA and CIA. They were meant to prevent the rise of communism in the USA. In
1949, the Soviet Union released a nuclear bomb so Truman created a nuclear civil defense
program(Norton,2015).

In the 1960s and 1970s, there was a feminist movement to improve conditions for women in the
United States.
One of the changes that came from the women’s movement was the 1973 Supreme Court decision in
Roe v. Wade. This victory ensured that women had the right to end a pregnancy and that this right was
protected.
The feminist movement also brought about a cultural shift. Family roles differed from the traditional
gender expectations. By the end of the 70s, women were having less babies. Additionally, unmarried
women were giving birth and leading matriarchal families more often. This was previously nearly
unheard of. Divorce became more acceptable and divorce rates rose. Culturally, blended families and
alternative lifestyles were more common and not as taboo(Norton, 2015).
