HIS 100 Module Seven Activity Template: Historical Context
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
The Chernobyl Nuclear Incident
Part 1: Creating the research question:
Question: How can we learn from the tragedies of our past to best prevent smaller-scale
incidents in our day-to-day lives?
Initially, my beliefs about the Chernobyl incident were purely based on safety measures that had
not been put in place and the outcomes of an unavoidable situation. Throughout history, we can see
events that ended tragically due to human error but it was my belief that Chernobyl was one of the few
cases that fell into the category of inevitable.
My initial outlook on the Chernobyl events was to delve
into the scientific and medicinal aspects of the things we may learn despite a terrible situation, however,
as I read on I learned that the safety lessons we may learn are of equal importance.
As I read on I found myself relating spall scale incidents in my life where myself or people I have
known had nearly been injured due to workplace negligence. From more recent work in a warehouse
environment to a wartime environment, but each time I looked into the incidents, none could be found
devoid of human error.
My initial research began with the scientific approach looking into the results of the Chernobyl
events and seeking to further understand the dangers that may be found in our constant quest for new
energy sources. In truth, this is something that I would like to research more extensively without the
confines of a classroom environment. While the effects we are having on the planet are devastating, to
say the least, there is always an ever-looming possibility of immediate disaster as we saw with the
outcome of Chernobyl. It was when we were to look into the possible biases of our work that I was
forced to branch out to an alternate source recommended by a classmate. Their recommendation in turn
opened my eyes to the pushes for results, and the negation of safety implementations in the pursuit of
productivity. This is where the focus of my research shifted to the importance of the safety measures set
in
place in our lives.

Part 2:
Building Context to address questions:
The Chernobyl nuclear facility in Ukraine suffered catastrophic falures and as a result released
great ammounts of radiation into the surrounding areas. The massive release of radioactive material at
the accident led to widespread radiation exposure, in particular to people evacuated from the
settlements near the reactor and workers involved in the clean-up operations, and also to several millons
living in contaminated regions in Russia, Belorus and Ukraine.
A key figure in this event would be
Chernobyl’s general director: Viktor Bryukhanov.
Viktor
Bryukhanov had been Chernobyl’s general director since the early 1970s. He was a hard-working and
skilled engineer, but his specialisation was not in the field of nuclear energy. He called upon his superiors
for approval with regards to the planned test on reactor no. 4 but received no response. This silence did
not trouble him - it was a normal part of Soviet bureaucracy. As such, he authorised his team to carry out
the experiment.

Part 3: Examining how Bias impacts narratives:
While conducting my initial research on the Chernobyl incident I foung that the scientific and
medical approach of documentation were quite extensive and held little to no bias as that any
premeditation of the authors task would bring speculation and opinion into the report and thusly make
it invalid as a document set upon the found evidences and facts. During the discussions however I
learned that in the sources available there were authors that would select and interview specific
survivors based on their rate of exposure and proximity to the disaster site. this would be considered a
bias as that toe best understand the effects of the disaster a 100% census would need to be condusted
without exclusion.
Upon reading the final source material the event was very well articulated and the responsability
of the event seemed to finally have a name, a group to hold the blame. While the incidect initially a
negligence issue with the failure to test reactor no 4. Had teh proper safety measures been taken the
event may have been avoided, however the test
was skipped in the name of productivity much like so
many other catastrophic events.
As I read onward I noticed that not much responability was taken from the U.S.S.R. during this
time. while it was hinted at in mild ways noting the Coviet bureaucracies, the full extent of what pressure
the Soviet Union was placing on the facility was never truly articulated. While this may be one of the
things the history sweeps under the rug, I feel it important that we understand that the pressures of our
superiors cannot be reason to endanger yourself or others.

As we look into our pasts we can see similarities in events. In this way we learn from our
past mistakes and from the mistakes of those before us. When we recall the events of
Chernobyl and Deepwater Horixon, we are afforded the ability to see the worst case scenario.
These instances can easily ne btoken down and then compared to the events of our lives. From
ensuring how we drive is to the best of our abilities, to Ensuring the simple safety protocals set
in place are not sacrificed in the neam of progess. While these day to day events may not have
the same effect globaly as a catastrophy like Chernobyl, the importance of ensuring safety is just
as critical. As George Santayana said, "Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on
retentiveness. When change is absolute there remains no being to improve and no direction is
set for possible improvement: and when experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy
is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
As we go through life we shoudl always seek to educate ourselves with the known truths
rather than the personally infunced opinois of those aroung us. In doing so we can make
informed decisions of our own accord with the outside infulnces of our environemts. The more
informed we become the more our values will become something of our own ass well, thusly
opening ourselve up to knew ideas and train of thoughts.
