HIS 100 Module Three Activity: Historical Context
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
Creation of Earth Day
Describe the historical context surrounding your historical event.
The historical context surrounding my topic is Bringing a unified, nationwide, motivated
awareness to the damage we are doing to our planet and how it does not matter where you live
on this planet, what you do matters all around.
Describe a key historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event.
Denis Hayes was a founder of Earth Day and Environmental Action’s first director, introducing the
first Earth Day to the crowd gathered at the Washington Monument. He said “We are building a
movement, a movement with a broad base, a movement which transcends traditional political
boundaries…Earth Day is the beginning.”
Explain the key historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event.
Earth Day was the beginning for the environmental movement as we know it today and for the
Environmental Action, which was organized by the founders of Earth Day.
Articulate how the historical context caused or influenced your chosen historical event.
The objective of Earth Day was to get a nationwide demonstration of concern for the
environment. They wanted to make enough “noise” that it would wake of the government and
finally force this issue permanently into the political arena. (Ruben, B., 1995)
Explain how connecting your historical event and current event improves the understanding of
your topic.
The topic I chose is one of history as well as today. I would say its more like continuing the
historical event and keeping it current. I believe connecting the historical event, Creation of
Earth Day, to current day Earth Day will better the understanding of the importance of Earth Day.
