Slavery vs. Indentured Servitude

Slavery has been around for centuries, unfortunately. Many people have formed
servitude including African empires. United states history shows much history of how slavery
was. Indentured Servitude was habitual during the 17
th
and 18
th
centuries. At this time
American colonies grew and developed economically. If it wasn’t for the replacement of
Indentured Servitude with slavery, Americans would have not had the opportunity to grow. In
this case, there was a continuum of racism which showed a vast amount of social issues
among one another.
The convention of slavery between Europeans and Africans was quite different. At this time in
Africa, slavery was known to those who wanted debt and crime relief. Also in Africa, certain
individuals had the chance to become free like the Europeans. Similar to the European serf
system, those seeking protection, or relief from starvation, would become the servants of
those who provided relief (Openstax,2023). Europeans did not give a form of relief to be free.
The European form of slavery was called chattel slavery, where you were one man's property,
and you were either bought or sold. In order to be free, the slaves had to escape, which led to
group trades and an increase in slavery at this time.
Every colony had enslaved people, from the southern rice plantations in Charles Town, South
Carolina, to the northern wharves of Boston (Opentstax,2023). By the 18th century, slavery
became permanent and children who were born to enslaved people became enslaved. There
were slaves and Indentured servants in the American colonies. In the U. S, European
immigrants worked in exchange for the price of passage to America in the 1600’s. The
difference is that slaves had no choice but to be slaves. And the indentured servants were
given choices such as contracts.
Indentured servitude is a form of labor where an individual
is under contract to work without a salary to repay an indenture or loan within a certain
timeframe (Tardi,2022). Sometimes these contracts would be from 5-7 years to repay debt. In
this case, both slaves and indentured servants could be sold, loaned, or inherited.
Economically Indentured servants became too expensive leaving slavery to continuously
increase and be preferred.
