Family and Consumer Sciences THIS DAY IN HISTORY 1841-1883 JULY 2ND MAY 14TH FALL SEPTEMBER 29TH Catharine Beecher published her book A Treatise on Domestic Economy. This contributed to the domestic science movement. YWCA formally known as the Ladies Christian Association was formed in New York City. Morrill Act was passed by President Abraham Lincoln making it possible for funds to be made for the state to build public colleges. Miss Ellen H. Swallow received her Bachelor of Science degree. She also got her Masters awarded by Vassar. Ellen Swallow Richards helped in establishing a women’s laboratory allowing hundreds of women to train there. Ellen H. Richards’ book, Chemistry for Cooking and Cleaning: A Manual for Housekeepers is published It was voted that the Women’s Laboratory be discontinued so that students would be admitted to the Kidder Laboratories with no regard for gender. 184 1 185 8 186 2 187 3 187 6 188 2 1883

Swallow Richards starts work after being appointed to work under Professor Nichols in Sanitation Chemistry for $600 yearly Mrs. Ellen Swallow Richards was voted on a raise in yearly salary to $1000 Hatch Act passed providing basic and applied agriculture research for state colleges to be conducted Second Morrill passed allowing black college students funding Ellen Richards was the head of creating the Rumford Kitchen in Chicago at the World’s Columbian Exposition Ellen Richards along with others formed a summer conference in Lake Placid, New York. Smith-Lever Act is passed clarifying the creation of the Agriculture Extension Service to provide more education opportunities to men and women. Smith-Hughes Act is passed setting apart vocational education and regular high school curriculum. This established federal funds for vocational education. As part of the war effort, home economists taught the nation about food substitution and preservation so that they could correctly provision the Allied armies. 1911 1914 1917 1917-1920

Recognition of Childcare as part of the Home Economics Curriculum came about. Corporations for food started hiring Home Economists to make recipes with nutritional information. The Betty Lamp symbol/logo is now officially used for the American Home Economics Association. By the public, Home Economists in the state become known as experts in human nutrition. The one appointed to Roosevelt’s First Nutrition Congress was Agnes Faye Morgan. Undergraduate programs in home economics begin under accreditation. The provision of grand to the state for vocational-technical education programs came after the Vocation Education Act which made it possible for employment outside the home Vocational Education Act started gearing its work much more towards males. Going forward the Family and Consumer Sciences Program has an eliminated path for an increasing number of men and women at young ages entering. The program continues to shape a bright future for the family and the program itself. 1991 Present Day 1993 1994 199 8 2008 2009 Home Economics is changed to Consumer Sciences. Struggles come over the FCS programs to stay in public schools because of a decrease in Association membership. 100-year celebrations held nationally for the organization of AAFCS To commemorate and generate positive pro networks in the Southeast Idaho area First Lake Bonneville Summit was held at BYU-Idaho.
