Morrill Act was passed

possible for funds to be
made for the state to
build public colleges.
Miss Ellen H. Swallow
received her Bachelor
of Science degree.
She also got her
Masters awarded by
Vassar.
Ellen Swallow
Richards helped in
establishing a
women’s laboratory
allowing hundreds of
women to train there.
Ellen H. Richards’
book, Chemistry for
Cooking and
Cleaning: A Manual
for Housekeepers is
published
It was voted that the
Women’s Laboratory be
discontinued so that
students would be
admitted to the Kidder
Laboratories with no
regard for gender.

in Chicago at the

conference in Lake

Economics

formed, and Ellen

established federal funds
for vocational education.
As part of the war effort, home economists taught the nation about food
substitution and preservation so that they could correctly provision the
Allied armies.
