HIS 223 Module Six Analysis Paper Guidelines and Rubric Overview This analysis paper is not an opinion paper and should not contain your opinions on events, but rather a thorough analysis of the information and historical context specific to the assignment instructions. Throughout this course, you will critically examine primary and secondary sources. Be sure to read each source fully, multiple times if necessary. As you review each source, ask yourself the following questions: Who is the author and what is his or her place in society? What is the purpose of the piece? Why was it written? What values or ideas are behind the content in the source? How are they different from your own? Is the piece credible? Why or why not? Can the piece be used to support a historical debate? Why or why not? Your analysis will not directly answer all these questions. However, the picture that is painted by your responses to these questions is essential in constructing your analysis of the source. You will apply these skills in developing your analysis paper. Prompt Both during and after World War I, fierce debates raged over the question of whether large-scale offensives like the Somme were fruitlessly wasteful or, as the general who planned these initiatives argued, painful but necessary and even productive. In this analysis paper, you will build on your skills by analyzing and comparing two primary sources; links to these sources are found below. Compare Douglas Haig’s final dispatch and David Lloyd George’s comments on the battle of the Somme. What to Submit Submit your analysis paper as a Word document, two to three pages in length, with Times New Roman font, double-spacing, and one-inch margins. Any sources should be cited according to Turabian/Chicago style. Consult the Chicago Style Guide available through the Shapiro Library for more information on citations.
