Discussion Forum #4- Mason Blasik Image #1: While The Freedmen’s Bureau purpose might have looked good on paper, I don’t think their advertisement had the best choice. The purpose was to provide food, shelter, education, and other services for former slaves and poor whites. The bureau did other great things like open up schools and hospitals to people who didn’t previously have access to such things, which is great, don’t get my wrong. Just my observations, the first thing that jumps out to me is the graphic on the advertisement. Not just the picture depicted, but the language used as well is very derogatory. It seems like those people that balked at using federal funds had won out here. Personally, the hostility doesn’t make much sense to me because everything that was done had a purpose for the betterment of former slaves and poor whites alike. To me, using federal funds for the betterment of everyone wouldn’t be a problem at all, but it goes to show how evident racism was during those times. Image #3: What different times we live in today, compared to then. Racism is still alive throughout the country today, but I wouldn’t say to such an extent, thankfully. I can’t imagine killing someone, let alone killing them just because it prevented someone from voting. All of this based solely on the color of their skin. I can understand that just a few years prior that white men owned these same freedmen as slaves and that this might be brand new to them. That doesn’t make it okay for someone to try and take freedoms away and it certainly doesn’t warrant killing someone, let alone one hundred people. My thoughts and impressions of the Colfax Massacre are just astonishment because for people to go to those great lengths just to prevent somebody or in this case, several people from voting is just mind blowing. I couldn’t imagine being killed or someone attempting to kill me just because I wanted my voice to be heard. Es sense for African Image #4: I think given the events that transpired on Easter Sunday in 1873 in Colfax, Louisiana, it definitely makes for African Americans to make a move to Kansas. It seems to me like they were trying to avoid any trouble from white people or previous slave owners, that they just wanted to better their lives and live free. When I look at this image, I see several freed African Americans who all want to same thing, to be free and live their live away from conflict and strife. It seems like they all had the same idea to get out of the south and make a move towards Kansas. Except for when most African Americans made the move to Kansas, their freedom was still in question once “popular sovereignty” became a thing. Popular sovereignty was where settlers decided whether slavery would be legal or illegal. It angered many northerners because it created the possibility that slavery might expand to areas where it had been prohibited.
