HIS 100 Module Five Activity Template: Historical Interpretations
Replace the bracketed text below with your responses.
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
Stonewall Riots Describe how exploring your research question improved your understanding of the historical roots of your current event.
I gained a deeper understanding of the historical roots of my current event when I explored my research question by exploring movements and events that supported the LGBTQ+ community. Additionally, it helps me understand how long it took to pass a law protecting equality. Additionally, this allows me to compare the different events that have occurred as well as the differences and similarities that might have occurred during the Stonewall Riots and the passage
of the Equality Law for LGBTQ+ in 2021. In addition to understanding the historical roots of my current problem, I can also see the progress people have made when openly discussing their sexuality. According to Stonewall Riots, wealthy patrons of clubs who wanted to keep their sexuality a secret were blackmailed by the mania.
Explain how biased perspectives influence what is known about both your historical and current events.
We can only see the neglect and favor the LGBTQ+ community receives due to biased perspectives because they confine what is known about my history and current events. It is impossible to know whether the Stonewall Riots was more about the Mafia and their criminal activities than it was about the discrimination they were facing when we look at both events. We can only see the bias viewpoint of those who support the LGBTQ+ community and those who are involved in both events. Would they really be unable to get to the bar if all the chaos was preventing them from getting there?
Propose how the narrative about your historical event might change if it were told from a missing perspective.
I would have to completely rewrite the narrative of my historical event if the missing perspective
had been included. For example, the New York Police Department's perspective is missing from my historical event. In this way, we will be able to better understand why the raids were conducted in the bars and whether they were conducted across all bars that served the LGBTQ+ community or only those serving the groups. Furthermore, we gain an understanding of the officers' perspectives and learn whether the raid was forced, and if any officers made up of members of the LTBQ+ community were also involved.
Propose how the narrative about your current event might change if it were told from a missing perspective.
This is also a challenge for me considering my current event is an event for the community's pride day parade. There don't seem to be many narratives missing from the event as the media now seems to cover all angles and perspectives.
