HIS 100 Module Three Activity Template: Historical Context Replace the bracketed text below with your responses.
Identify the topic you chose to explore:
Climate Change and Environmental Issues: Chernobyl
Describe the historical context surrounding your historical event.
1986, nearing the unexpected end of the Cold war. The USSR and the United States, still competing in its nuclear competition, create an environment of unhinged discovery and risk to make forward progress to technologically dominate the other in the nuclear field. These influences had a great impact on the disaster.
Describe a key historical figure or group’s participation in your historical event.
The Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) was the major political party during the Soviet era that played a major role in Chernobyl’s construction. Explain the key historical figure or group’s motivation to participate in your historical event.
The CPSU, driven by several factors to achieve nuclear dominance, ignored the lack of safety systems and flawed reactor design of the Chernobyl reactors. This led to its unfortunate participation in the Disaster.
Articulate how the historical context caused or influenced your chosen historical event.
With many questioning the CPSU during the start of the Soviet Union’ fall in the 1980’s and the Cold war still ongoing, Critical items regarding Chernobyl were ignored and hidden from public view (Turmel et al., 2021). This paired with Intense Nuclear Competition were major historical factors that led to the Disaster at Chernobyl Explain how connecting your historical event and current event improves the understanding of your topic.
Connecting Chernobyl to Current Climate Change helps to understand the current stance of these topics and why current nuclear safety pacts are in place. Chernobyl helped to strengthen the ideas of Nuclear Safety to help put systems in place to prevent future environmental disasters like this one from occurring again. Turmel, A. T., Burnham, A. J., Bereskin, A. C., & Snelling, A. J. (2021, September 8). Hiding truth at all costs: Revisiting the Chernobyl disaster. NAOC. https://natoassociation.ca/hiding-
