HIS 100 Module Two Activity Template: Primary and Secondary Sources Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Non-graded portion : List your historical research topic here: o The Tulsa Massacre Graded portion: Distinguish between primary and secondary sources. When we are identifying the difference between primary and secondary sources I think about their purposes. A primary source is the original, the first hand of the actual event. Usually, this means a source that has been written at the time of an event or by someone who was involved. Now secondary sources are duplicates or we can say copies. A secondary source is after the event. It is usually from someone who was not involved in the event. However, they utilize a lot of primary sources to interpret the event. Explain why it is important to consult a variety of sources when conducting historical research. Include specific details and examples. It is important to check a variety of sources so that you can be exposed to the latest information. If we utilize the same sources, we only have one perspective, which could be bad if the source contains any biases or false information. For example, my topic is the Tulsa Massacre. If I only chose one source of information, I would be less likely to understand the events that occurred. The topic itself is too wide to explore with just one source of information. But let us say that I choose to digest information from two other sources, “Interpreting Violence: The 1921 Tulsa Race Riot and its Legacy” and “Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 Testimony Given”. The first source “Interpreting Violence” gives a concise history of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the reasons behind the conflicts of race. It also gives us an aspect of the role that the legal system played as well, regarding the aftermath of this event. This information is useful for understanding the events that occurred. The second source is where we get a closer look at the events because it is from someone who witnessed the events. This would be important if we wanted to research the impact it had on the community of Tulsa. Having multiple sources of information gives us knowledge but also allows us to create and explore further viewpoints. Identify one primary source that would help investigate your research question (include the title, author, and link to the source). Tulsa Race Riot Of 1921 Testimony Given. (1999, August 10). Choose a current event related to the subject of your historical research question and explain how they are connected. Racism is something that still exists in our country, and it has a bigger impact on society than one can believe. While researching and following up on information that I have explored I came across a current event that was relatable to my topic. On Dec. 11, 1917, thirteen Black soldiers from the all-black 24 th Infantry Regiment were hung following racial violence in Houston. It was considered the largest mass execution of American soldiers in the history of the U.S. Army. The Army convicted 110 of those Black soldiers of murder, mutiny, and other crimes in mass trials where the soldiers were represented by one officer who was not a lawyer. During 2020-2021 there were petitions received and reviewed of the convictions, while the Secretary of the Army asked the Army Board to investigate the cases. After reviewing these cases, they realized the proceedings were unfair, and up until recently, they have overturned those convictions. This is relatable to my research question because this is again another event where race takes over and resulted in killings that were not rightfully justified. It took over one hundred years later for someone to analyze the events that occurred and acknowledge the truth about what crimes African Americans were accused of. In Tulsa, the major newspapers in that community did not report much on the Black community and this is where there are similarities within both events. The media did not acknowledge the truth of these events until decades later. Instead, the media used prejudicial stereotypes and attempted to use comedy through mockery and presented African Americans as criminals. I am focusing on events like these to help me identify the similarities in how the media suppresses events which allows me to fully answer and understand my research question. Resources: Karatzas, K.
