Module 7 Short Responses – Question 1 Name three historical lenses that you could apply to gain a fuller picture of the relationship between Natives and white settlers. Be sure to respond to this question in no more than one sentence, using proper grammar. To get a better understanding of the relationship between Native Americans and white settlers, I would examine the situation from social, economic, and political perspectives. By using the political lens, I can focus on the laws that were in place during that time period. The social lens will allow me to study the different groups of people involved. Lastly, the economic lens will help me analyze the relationships between capital and labor. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 2 Revise the thesis statement at the top of this page to reflect a more complex view of the relationship between Natives and white settlers. Your revised thesis statement should be longer than one sentence. During the early 19th century, there were numerous disputes between Native American tribes and white settlers over land ownership. The white settlers employed various tactics to gain control over the disputed territories, including using force, deception, and manipulation. Unfortunately, government officials also became involved in these conflicts, often siding with the white settlers and using their power to help them achieve their goals. This led to significant injustices being perpetrated against Native American communities, who were often forced to abandon their ancestral lands and relocate to less desirable areas. Overall, this period of history highlights the deep-seated inequalities and power imbalances that existed between Native Americans and white settlers during this time. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 3 Name three historical lenses that you could use to look at the events described in the video you just saw. Using a social, economic, and cultural lens can provide a comprehensive understanding of the issue at hand. By examining how social factors, economic factors, and cultural factors intersect and influence each other, you can gain a deeper understanding of the complexities involved. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 4 Massasoit's decision to approach the Pilgrims about an alliance was contingent on what previous event or events? (Name one or two.)
Massasoit's decision was influenced by the deadly diseases that the Europeans brought to their homeland, causing suffering from the plague. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 5 Name one short-term consequence and one long-term consequence of the alliance between the Wampanoag and the Pilgrims. A long-term consequence of the arrival of the Pilgrims was the ongoing war in the 1630s between the Wampanoag tribe and Pilgrims. A short-term consequence was the mutual defense alliance between the two groups. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 6 How has your understanding of the historical event in your essay changed as a result of your research? Describe one instance of a misconception or a wrong idea you had about your topic that has been corrected after researching and writing about it. I now have a better understanding of historical events and the different lenses through which to analyze them. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 7 Name four historical lenses through which you could analyze the events of the Cherokee Removal. Specify one aspect of this event for each lens that you cite. The text suggests using four lenses for analyzing the situation: social, military, political, and economic. The social lens is used for communication, the military lens is used for the troops, the political lens is used for the treaty. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 8 Agree or disagree with the following thesis statement: "The Treaty of New Echota was invalid, and the National Party was correct to oppose it." Cite at least three historical facts that support your position. I agree with the statement. The Cherokee National Council threatened to impeach John Ridge. John Ross denounced the treaty. In 1838 Martin Van Buren ordered General Winfield
Scott to begin removing the Native Americans.
