Project 3 Asia Jones Motley Southern New Hampshire University CJ 120 Culture Awareness in CJ Dr.Jones December 17 th , 2023
Subject: Together, we can make a difference Good Afternoon, Having the chance to return to such a worthwhile cause is an honor. My experience as a victim advocate in Accomack County, Virginia, shows me the steps to take to address the injustices against my community. Everyone involved has struggled because of the lack of cultural awareness, so it's time for a change. Please find attached an assessment and suggestions to help criminal justice professionals establish better relationships with their communities. My eagerness to work with you is fueled by your feedback. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Best regards, Asia Jones Motley Email Attachment: The way people interact with criminal justice professionals can be affected significantly by cultural differences. The diversity of cultures must be understood, and an open mind must be supported. Various groups have their own morals and values. Their differences do not make them wrong just because they differ from ours. In the criminal justice system, it might be possible to bridge the gap between communities with proper training and a more diverse representation of individuals. In unfamiliar cultures, criminal justice professionals may be viewed differently, with some holding negative opinions and others holding positive ones. As a result of their interactions with the criminal justice system, communities have developed
stereotypes about specific groups of people. Stereotyping is a belief about a particular group of people based on generalized assumptions. Such beliefs can be positive or negative, but they can lead to bias and prejudice towards people. Even though Asians do not always conform to the stereotypes associated with their race, some people still believe that they are successful and represent the "model minority". Asian communities tend to have a good relationship with the police and have not had many negative experiences with them. However, due to the historical perception of Asians as the model minority, criminal justice professionals tend to treat them differently. Undocumented individuals and people of color have a negative perception of police officers. Moreover, they have dealt with criminal justice practitioners as well as heard and seen what they can. Criminal offenses committed by illegal immigrants have led to them being labeled dangerous, in some cases. Because they are afraid to report crimes when harmed, they make themselves victims because they are not all dangerous. Race and religion should not matter to anyone. They must be treated as we would any other community member to keep them safe. There has historically been a negative perception of police officers, judges, and prosecutors among people of color. There has been an alarming increase in the number of blacks and Hispanics being stopped and frisked in Virginia. In recent years, police officers have killed, shot, or arrested too many unarmed Black men. In urban areas, people are hesitant to trust the police because of these reasons. Following their arrest, these individuals are judged based on their appearance and their speech when they enter a courtroom. There have been many instances of unfair treatment of people living in urban communities. Language, religion, deafness, and illiteracy struggles also contributed to the lack of understanding between laypeople and criminal justice specialists. Due to language barriers, many

misunderstandings have occurred. Several criminal justice professionals speak only English in the country since English is the nation's primary language. Many people from unfamiliar cultures have been arrested because they cannot communicate with the arresting officer in English. Especially since 9/11, Muslims have faced discrimination. Terrorists are classified as people with religious convictions. Illiteracy can present a major problem for a person who is incapable of reading and writing. A lack of procedures to help these individuals might lead them to sign a confession or something else they do not understand. Criminal justice has also faced problems related to deafness, particularly in prisons. There are a few things you can do to fix this: Comprehending the Public: Law enforcement and the communities they serve need to develop mutual trust and understanding in order to achieve reconciliation. What's wrong with the police department and how the community feels are discussed in the community. When the police department receives criticism, it stays receptive. Diversity training: educates participants on dealing with individuals who are different. It supplies skills to understand and overcome bias to improve interactions. Procedural justice: Dispute resolution and resource allocation processes should be fair according to procedural justice. Positive change can be achieved, and stronger relationships can be built by embracing it. Legitimacy of the police : A belief in the ability of the police to support social order in communities and resolve issues. Hiring people regardless of age, race, and religion is a diverse hiring practice. Criminal justice professionals can achieve the following by doing certain things:
they can communicate more effectively It is possible for them to build community trust It is possible for them to repair the relationship between the community and the police Increased cultural awareness is one of their benefits By implementing these measures, we can significantly reduce the incidence of civil rights violations. We can foster a culture of fairness and impartiality in law enforcement. And we can create a more diverse and inclusive police force that better reflects the communities it serves. Let's work together to build a safer and more equitable society. In order to fix a broken system, we need a change that helps everyone, not just one group. Changes should have a lasting impact on everyone's lives. Creating an understanding of the community, ensuring transparency and accountability, and encouraging positive interactions are all important to improving relationships between criminal justice professionals and the community. A safer, better, and more secure community can be achieved by these practices.
