1 Russian Invasion of Ukraine: An analysis and argumentative paper on Russo-Ukrainian War
2 Introduction The Russian invasion of Ukraine is an ongoing military conflict between Ukraine and Russia that was started by the invasion of the Donetsk, Kherson, Kharkiv, and Kyiv regions of Ukraine. The launch of this invasion was met with strong international condemnation, with many Western countries placing heavy sanctions on Russia and top Russian officials. Today, a year and a half since the beginning of the invasion, the advance of Russian forces has been almost entirely stopped and is widely viewed as a failed invasion. During this argumentative essay, we will analyze both perspectives of this conflict, as well as provide evidence and reasoning to support our claims. Major Perspectives The first major perspective of this conflict is the perspective of the Russian government. Upon the beginning of the invasion, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that the reason for his invasion was to “demilitarize and denazify” (Kirby, 2023) Ukraine’s government, as well as trying to stop NATO expansion, which the Kremlin feared NATO would use Ukraine to station nuclear weapons on their borders. This perspective maintains the fact that Russia is the victim in this situation and invaded in order to protect their sovereignty. The second major perspective of this conflict is the perspective of Ukraine and its Western allies. Ukraine is a sovereign democratic nation that is under attack from an unprovoked aggressor and
3 is preventing further aggression from the Russians against other nations. There have also been several humanitarian incidents and war crimes that have been committed against the Ukrainian people by the Russians. Lastly, this is not the first time Ukrainian land has been stolen by the Russians, as they annexed Crimea in 2014. This perspective establishes that the invasion of Ukraine is a violation of international law and an attack against democracy. Stand with Ukraine Figure 1: Before and After pictures of bombed Ukrainian theater with the word “CHILDREN” written outside of it. (Vlamis, 2022) Between the Russian and Ukrainian perspectives on this conflict, the side that I am supporting is the Ukrainian perspective. I support the Ukrainians because despite the Kremlin’s reasoning, their invasion of Ukraine is a direct violation of international law and of Ukraine’s sovereignty that is based largely on a false claim that NATO would place nuclear weapons in Ukraine. 4 claim is untrue because, in 1994, the UK and the USA signed a treaty with Russia and Ukraine to denuclearize Ukraine. Furthermore, I support Ukraine because of Russia’s repeated humanitarian and war crimes throughout its invasion. For example, in the early days of the war, Russia bombed a theater in the city of Mariupol that was being used as a shelter for over 1000 civilians and children, even though it was marked with the Russian word for children outside the building. Russian President Vladimir Putin was also charged by the ICC with war crimes of unlawful deportation and transfer of population, mainly children, from areas of Ukraine into Russia (ICC, 2023). These reasons are some of the many reasons why I believe in and support the Ukrainian perspective of this conflict. Conclusion In conclusion, the Russian invasion of Ukraine is a very important and controversial issue. However, standing with Ukraine is an important and justifiable side to take in this conflict. The evidence against Russia is overwhelming, and as an international community more must be done to stop this conflict and prevent future conflicts.
