Jonathan A. Burnham February 5, 2024 Milestone Two Context: Pulling the free world into disagreements that had nothing to do with them is the main reason for the departure of the Americas from Great Britain. Coming to America the colonies wanted a fresh start. Having a "mother" country such as Great Britain meant that they inherited their enemies. This caused distress and trouble that was unwanted from the free world. "that her motive was INTEREST not ATTACHMENT; that she did not protect us from OUR ENEMIES on OUR ACCOUNT, but from HER ENEMIES on HER OWN ACCOUNT" 1 . This brought financial burden to a country that was just starting out. America felt as though they were not attached for the benefit of them but that it was just in the interest of the mother country. Religious freedom was wanted but the mother country wanted the Catholic Church to be the only recognized religion. One of the main reasons for coming across the sea was for religious freedom. Settlers wanted to be allowed to worship openly without fear of retribution. As Great Britain started to enforce their ruling, religious freedom was not a luxury that was offered. " these dissatisfied community members apparently did not have strong or consistent political and religious sympathies" 2 . Often times those who worship differently were punished or forced to hide. 1 1.Thomas Paine, Common Sense , 1776, https://ezproxy.snhu.edu/login?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx? direct=true&db=nlebk&AN=313505&site=eds-live&scope=site&ebv=EB&ppid=pp_34. 2 2.Keith Mason, “Localism, Evangelicalism, and Loyalism: The Sources of Discontent in the Revolutionary Chesapeake,” The Journal of Southern History 56, no. 1 (1990): 25, https://doi.org/10.2307/2210663.
Both the unwanted enemies and religion forced America into a choice which led to a rebellion against the mother country. With the cost of the war rising taxes went up as well. This caused a young country to make a decision about if they wanted to inherit what their "mother" forced them into. That is a large reason as to why the Patriots were created. Among that reasoning also stood religious freedom which was a main reasoning for sailing across the sea. These issues being pushed out and ignored ignited a rebellion and a fire to be free and to have a new world that was for the people. Thesis Statement: Pragmatic colonists wanted to stay loyal to Great Britain, because they enjoyed the protection, thought the taxes were fair, and they were being harassed by the others who opposed. .
