Module 1 Short Responses – Question 1 In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you think so?
The influx of unskilled Irish immigrants into New York City in the 1840s and early 1850s drives down wages for other workers at the low end of the salary ladder.
I believe this statement is being written with an Economic lens. The focuses of the sentence are on wages and workers, the domain of trade and capital, with the influx of the Irish being secondary as an explanation for why wages were down for the lower class. Additionally, it posits that the immigrants were "unskilled", a term that almost exclusively remains in the domain of a capitalist lens as all labor requires some amount of skill.
Module 1 Short Responses – Question 2 In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you think so?
In 1908 Aram Pothier, an immigrant from Quebec, is elected governor of Rhode Island with strong support from the Québécois community.
This statement is a very clear example of a Political lens being used. We have a political event as the centerpiece with a faction of voters who supported the election of Aram Pothier. The factions and voters surrounding the event are not the focus, but instead the result: the government approving the election of Aram Pothier in Rhode Island.
Module 1 Short Responses – Question 3 In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you think so?
Irish immigrants and first-generation Irish-Americans come to dominate the hierarchy of the American Catholic Church in the late 19th century.
I believe this scenario includes all of the major hallmarks of a Religious lens, which is defined by religious ideas, movements, and institutions. The institution in question is the American Catholic Church, the idea at play is the power struggle in the hierarchy of the Church, and the movement is Irish Catholicism.
Module 1 Short Responses – Question 4 In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you think so?
Immigration to the United States comes to be seen as a "rite of passage" for young Québécois

women in the early 20th century.
I believe this passage to be portrayed from a Cultural lens. It shows the culture of the Québécois women being influenced by immigration to the United States specifically during the 20th century. That is to say, a particular culture at a particular moment in history, which is
how this lens was defined in this module.
Module 1 Short Responses – Question 5 If you had to write a paper on the Lincoln assassination, what would you like to know more about? Create three research questions that would be appropriate for a historical analysis essay, keeping in mind the characteristics of a critical research question. The three questions can be related, or they can address different aspects of the topic.
How did the assassination of Lincoln and the attempted simultaneous assassination of Johnson and Seward contribute towards the perception of the violence of the Confederacy in the Union states?
What was the intended goal of the assassination of Lincoln and the attempted assassinations of Johnson and Seward given that the civil war had come to a close?
How aware was Lincoln's assassin, Booth, as well as his conspirators, of the extent of the surrender from the Confederate forces at the time of the assassination when the plans were drafted and when they were carried out?
Module 1 Short Responses – Question 6 If you had to write a paper on Title IX, what would you like to know more about? Create three research questions that would be appropriate for a historical analysis essay, keeping in mind the characteristics of a critical research question. The three questions can be related, or they can address different aspects of the topic. How intentional was the effect of Title IX by its authors in regards to women's sports funding
and popularity?
How aware was Nixon of Title IX and its implications for academic institutions when he was signing it into law?
If the critics of Title IX claimed that the proportional increase in women's athletic programs meant significant funds had to be diverted from other programs, what political advantage did admitting your institution was heavily discriminating its students eight years after the Civil Rights Act had passed gain them?
