THE PHYSCISTS ASSIGNMENT There were many things in Physics during the 20
th
century. Scientists were working hard to make the world a better place, while some scientists were possibly trying to make it worse. Out of the three laboratories being federal, university, and industrial, I will be talking about Federal laboratories, for the purposes of this assignment. I also will be discussing how we made great advancements on Earth, including the discussion of Marie Curie and how she made the greatest contribution in the world of Physics.
In my opinion, Federal laboratories contributed the most to the 20
th
century physics. As I have learned throughout this course, “In the beginning of the century most of the research physicists were found in federally funded national research laboratories started in Washington D.C., and not in the universities” (Cassidy, 2013, p. 11). Additionally, “Federal research has been a thing sense 1884 by an act of congress” (Cassidy, 2013, p. 11). The federal government was left with taking charge of finding guidelines and standards for technology-based industries or for the management of the fast-growing population (Cassidy, 2013). The government believed
that they should use scientists to better the country (Cassidy, 2013). These are only very few of the reasons for Federal laboratories contributing to the 20
th
century physics.
The reason I feel that physics came further on Earth than it did in space, is because when I read from the reading materials in this course, I learned that, “If world war I had been the chemist war, World War II would be the physicists war” (Cassidy, 2013, p. 73). To me this means we made great advancements on earth because we all know the war did not happen in space. The United States did not join World War II until December 7
th
, 1941 (Cassidy, 2013). Further, after the fatal bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japan (Cassidy, 2013). When Pearl Harbor was attacked it is estimated that 1,700 physicists were already working on war related research

THE PHYSCISTS ASSIGNMENT (Cassie, 2013). On August 6
th
, 1945, America dropped one uranium bomb, then three days later they dropped a plutonium bomb. In Japan on September 2
nd,
1945, they surrendered ending the war (Cassidy, 2013). Japan clearly took a major loss in life that devastated the country from the loss of land and life. Therefore, I believe we accomplished more on earth than in space, making this the one thing that was accomplished in the 20
th
century. Why Marie Curie you may ask? She had many great accomplishments as a scientist and for woman in her field. Marie Curie was the first woman to become a professor in France, while she was also a two-time Nobel prize winner. Why is this so important you may ask? Well, she was the first woman ever to receive this award, once she received her second, she was the first ever to receive two for both genders (Mcgrayne, 2001, p. 11). This is a big accomplishment for women clearly because back in that time woman were not given opportunities to do much of anything from doing most house duties or taking care of the children. This only states her accomplishments in what she did, but what did she do to receive these awards? Her, but also her husband discovered radium and polonium (Curie, 1911, para. 6). Marie Curie and her husband made the decision to not apply for patens, even though they could have made millions (Mcgrayne, 2001, p. 24). There were many struggles of Marie Curie’s life I did not go over that she had to overcome to get to where she was, but in my mind, she was the one who had the greatest accomplishments in her time.
In conclusion, my opinion on federal laboratories furthering the advancement of physics stands, improving the earth as a whole, with different weapon advances. Marie Curie radium helped the world of Physics.
