CURRENT ISSUES 2 Universal pre-k is proposed to be the foundation for all learners and to give all children the same foundation on which to start their educational careers. The points that make this a topic to follow are funding, sourcing educators, and what curriculum should be included. By mandating universal pre-k, the intention is to expand the current Head Start program so that the benefits can be utilized by more families than it currently reaches, as well as including three- to four-year-old children. The current qualified teacher shortage is not limited to K-12, but also applies to preschool programs as well, where will we source these educators from when we can not currently staff our other public schools? Currently there is no one curriculum that is required to be followed, how can equitability and quality of education be guaranteed if there are not yet standards for younger learners in place?
