Module 7 Short Responses – Question 1 Name three historical lenses that you could apply to gain a fuller picture of the relationship between Natives and white settlers. Be sure to respond to this question in no more than one sentence, using proper grammar.
The three lenses I would apply are the social lens, political lens, and economic lens. The social lens explains how the different groups interacted with each other. The political lens focuses on laws during the time period and the influence legislation had over people. The economic lens focuses on different economies and labor. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 2 Revise the thesis statement at the top of this page to reflect a more complex view of the relationship between Natives and white settlers. Your revised thesis statement should be
longer than one sentence.
Conflicts between Natives and white settlers in the early 19th century can be
attributed to not only disputes over land, but also differences in culture, personal beliefs and religion. Government officials became involved due to personal belief differences over the concept of land ownership which caused ongoing conflict between the two groups. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 3 Name three historical lenses that you could use to look at the events described in the video you just saw.
The three historical lenses that I would use to look at the events described in the video are religious, economic and military. The political lens focuses on the treaties that were being made and broken. The economic lens focuses on the effects of the treaties and the impact on the success of the white settlers. The military lens focuses on the fact that there was a war taking place. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 4 Massasoit's decision to approach the Pilgrims about an alliance was contingent on what previous event or events? (Name one or two.)
Massasoit's decision to approach the Pilgrims about an alliance was contingent on the plague that was depleting the population of native people.
Module 7 Short Responses – Question 5 Name one short-term consequence and one long-term consequence of the alliance between the Wampanoag and the Pilgrims.
One short term consequence of the alliance between the Wampanoag and the Pilgrims was the strengthened defense against a common enemy. One long term consequence of the alliance between the Wampanoag and the Pilgrims was ongoing death and loss of the native people due to increased diseases, captivity and slavery brought upon them by the Puritans who outnumbered them despite their alliance. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 6 How has your understanding of the historical event in your essay changed as a result of your research? Describe one instance of a misconception or a wrong idea you had about
your topic that has been corrected after researching and writing about it.
I never really understood the purpose of Prohibition until I started researching it for this assignment. I always understood that organized crime syndicates had a disrespect for the law and capitalized on the outlaw of alcohol, but I never understood what the government’s motivation was for outlawing it. The primary misconception I had about Prohibition was what contributed to the repeal of the 18
th
Amendment. I understood it to be a means to stop organized crime and shut down the illegal activity that surrounded the ban on alcohol, but my
research corrected that misconception as it drew me to other reasons for the abolishment of the 18
th
Amendment such as the economic decline prohibition caused, increased tax rates for business owners and increased crime in general. Prohibition led to inflated prices of alcohol as it was illegal but in high demand, which then increased crime by regular citizens in order to obtain means of purchasing illegal alcohol during a time period where the economy was already in a decline, approaching the Great Depression. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 7 Name four historical lenses through which you could analyze the events of the Cherokee
Removal. Specify one aspect of this event for each lens that you cite.
The four historical lenses I would use to analyze the events of the Cherokee Removal would be the political lens, the military lens, the social lens and the economic lens. The political lens
focuses on the Treaty of the New Echota and the government’s role in the removal of the Cherokee. The military lens focuses on the troops that forced the Cherokee from their land in the Trail of Tears. The social lens focuses on the interactions between all parties involved
during the removal of the Cherokee. The economic lens focuses on the value the white settlers placed on the land occupied by the Cherokee due to the natural resources available on
the land. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 8 Agree or disagree with the following thesis statement: "The Treaty of New Echota was invalid, and the National Party was correct to oppose it." Cite at least three historical facts that support your position.
I agree with the statement: “The Treaty of New Echota was invalid, and the National Party was correct to oppose it.” The treaty was developed without including the voice of the vast majority of the Cherokee. The treaty was developed in a manner which favored the white settlers which invalidated the document. Additionally, John Ross denounced the treaty and it was declared a fraudulent treaty by the National Counsel.
