Title: Rachel Carson, a trailblazer for environmental awareness.
1.
Abstract
In this case study, I would like to discuss Rachel Carson and her contributions to environmental sciences, specifically how her book Silent Spring impacted the use of DDT as an insecticide. Rachel was born May 27, 1907, and died April 14, 1967. She was an American marine biologist, writer, and conservationist whose influential book Silent Sprint as well as other writing, are attributed to the advancement of the global environmental movement. While she is known as the mother of the modern environmental movement, her warning against the use of chemical insecticides made her target number one to the chemical companies and, as a result, had her blacklisted and labeled a community during a time when was the worst thing to be labeled and cost
a lot their livelihood. She did not. This case study is significant to understanding environmental history because the use of DDT had a vast and lasting impact on the environment. It is said to have nearly caused the extinction of the bald eagles as well as
being the cause of the thinning of raptor eggs as well as many other adverse effects not
only to plant and animal life but also to humans and our health extinction of bald eagles as well as being the cause of the thinning of raptor eggs and many other adverse effects as well. The banning of DDT is a big step in our environmental history, and as Rachel’s book is one of the causes of the ban on DDT, I think she is a figure in ecological history worth studying. Rachel Carson inspires persistence and grit because even those she faced many sexism and health issues, she never let that stop her from achieving her goals. She is remembered as one of the most significant figures in environmental history to date.

Question
Had Carson been a man, do you think they would have had success vilifying her as they did, considering her status within the scientific community? If so, would you have done the same knowing the consequences?

This article is from a medical journal that studies the effect of DDT on pregnant mothers.
The report concluded that children born exposed to the chemical had congenital disabilities.

This article is another medical case study of the effects of DDT. This focuses on whether DDT has connections in causing people to develop Alzheimer’s. It concluded that those who were exposed to the chemical had a higher chance of developing Alzheimer’s than those who were not. This article goes into deep detail on who Rachel Carson was and her teachings. It speaks on her leadership and environmental views as well as her book, which were the cause of the DDT ban.

The harmful effects of DDT, you should know - YouTube
.
I included this visual aid because it has lots of pictures that were engaging but also had simple and powerful descriptions, so it conveys the message of the harm of DDT and how it was banned.
I chose this image because I want the student to have a visual of the person we will be discussing, so it's not some vague person from the past, but they have a face to relate it
with.
