HIS 100 Module Two Activity Primary and Secondary Sources
The Tulsa Massacre took place on May 31, 1921. It was one of the most brutal race riots of its time. It was also one of America best best-kept secrets because it was not taught in American schools until recently, because of the secrecy of the residents of Greenwood. It was called the unspoken. It was said this made it safer for African Americans in the Greenwood district of Tulsa, they just didn’t speak about it. The results of the Tulsa massacre had huge negative economic effects on the residents of Greenwood that still exist today. The question at hand is, what were the short-term and long-term effects of the Tulsa massacre? However, an even better question would be, what are the historical and present economic effects of the Tulsa Massacre? To answer this question both primary and secondary resources must be used. A primary source is a first-hand account of a situation or phenomenon. This can include people, places, old newspaper articles from the past, or eyewitness accounts. Primary sources provide raw information and first-hand evidence (Streefkerk, 2018). Secondary sources are secondhand accounts, they come from summarized information from primary sources, and they most likely lead to a bigger topic. Secondary sources do not have any first-hand accounts. There are no eyewitnesses and they most likely do not provide actual news articles from the date and time of the situation or event or phenomena. Secondary sources in psychology include articles that summarize or provide interpretations of original research, they can be articles or books, review articles are also considered secondary sources and, they are often easier to read ( Cline Library, 2024).

It is important to consult a variety of sources to be accurate. By using multiple resources,
you can cross-reference information to understand the facts. Using a variety of resources can also eliminate bias and personal agendas. When doing research, it’s important to use a variety of
sources so you can get a well-rounded view, include several choices and perspectives, and diminish bias (libguides, 2024). It is important to avoid relying only on one type of source to avoid biases and inaccuracies. One source could only provide one point of view there is no way to cross reference or check the accuracy. That is why it is important to consult a variety of resources when conducting historical research. The benefit of using a diversity of sources is the accuracy. When you have a variety of sources while doing historical research. You have cross-
references and therefore can validate the information and accommodate accurate information on the event or phenomenon. One primary source that I found in the HIS 100 Library Guide in the Shapiro Library was
a first-hand account of the horrors experienced on the day of the Tulsa massacre called
, “100 Years Later, a Survivor Story of the Tulsa Race Massacre”.
Another primary source that I had the opportunity to listen to from the Shapiro Library would be the Broadcast Transcribe. That was an interview of the Tulsa massacre survivor called George Monroe. The name of this broadcast was called “Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 Testimony Given”
. Although these two broadcasts can be a bit extreme for some, there may be a lot of racial slurs in them. They are still first-hand accounts. People must realize that the vocabulary of today is very different from the vocabulary of many years ago. The fact is that both the broadcast transcript and the plain broadcast tell a story of a booming economy in Tulsa before the riots. One secondary resource that could help investigate my research question could be an article written by KD in 2018 called, ‘
Interpreting Violence The 1921 Tulsa Race Riot and its Legacy’
. I believe this is a 3

secondary source because it briefly touches on today’s current events. It also provides me with information on a case study concerning the Tulsa massacre and the legacy it left behind after the incident. I believe this current event is relevant because it briefly talks about the struggle of the Greenwood district in Tulsa. A current event that I believe is relevant to my research is the testimony of the three known survivors of the Tulsa massacre before a House Judiciary Committee in 2021.
Three massacre survivors,107-year-old Viola Fletcher, 106-year-old Lessie Evelyn Benningfield Randle, and 100-year-old Hughes Van Ellis, testified before a House Judiciary Committee, demanding justice and reparations for the pogrom that destroyed their all-Black neighborhood of Greenwood and sent their families running for their lives (Brown, 2021). This leads me to believe that the Greenwood district of Tulsa is still facing economic burdens. The connection between my research question and this current event is that
they are currently building a museum to help the economy of the Greenwood district of Tulsa.
The commission said it hoped that Greenwood Rising, would draw new visitors to the neighborhood, and would be considered a form of reparation for a community that was destroyed 100 years ago (Brown,2021). However, many of the residents disagree, and this informs me that there are still present economic issues today due to the Tulsa massacre. 4
