HIS 245 MOD 6 DISCUSSION
For a long time, the U.S. maintained a neutral stance regarding the Iran-Iraq War. However, it eventually
became very different. The Reagan administration presented an unbiased view during the conflict with Iran. It was revealed that the U.S. secretly gave arms to the Islamic Republic of Iran. This led to the country's involvement in the attacks on Kuwait. The U.S. agreed to help the government keep its oil flowing.[1] This helped secure the U.S's role as a protector of the country. However, the actions of Iran also led to the country's shifting support to Iraq. At the time of the conflict, the Iraqi economy struggled due to the country's mounting debts. The Iraqi Army and Saddam Hussein planned to take over Kuwait. The U.S. and its allies reacted quickly when the former Iraqi leader invaded Kuwait.[2] Although the U.S. had economic sanctions against Iraq, these sanctions didn't prevent the invasion.[3] The U.S. then deployed troops to Saudi Arabia in preparation for a military operation known as Desert Storm.[4] After the invasion of Kuwait, the U.S. did not carry out military actions against Saddam Hussein or the Iraqi Army.
