1 2-2 Final Project Milestone 1 Sara Myers HIS 223 Modern War & Society 05/11/23
2 For my final project, I will focus on the evolution of women's expectations and positions in the military. I believe that this topic is essential, not just because I am a woman. Women's role in the military has changed drastically in short amount of time. Previously, only nurses and secretaries were allowed to enter upper-level positions. Until recently, women weren't even allowed to see combat unless they were medical personnel. Now, they can hold high-ranking positions, see battle, and join some special forces units. I want to discuss how women have become more involved in the military. I believe this topic is very workable, with plenty of sources are online. I have not tried looking for physical copies. So far, I have found three resources for this assignment. One is an article about women's current role in the Air Force and how they are making changes. It covers women's history as spies and nurses and how they have integrated into a male-dominated industry. Although I will not specifically focus on the details of the Air Force, the journal article I read about their history was informative, and I can go back to it if I change my mind about specific details. Another source talks about the role of women in the Persian Gulf War and how they were able to hold positions alongside men during prolonged conflicts/wars. The last reference I came across was a journal filled with primary sources. It featured an essay that explores women's experiences during the Civil War. This topic is relevant as it was the first time women served in combat roles such as soldiers and spies. The three sources I found online came from the Shapiro Library and Google Scholar.
