Analysis Paper # 1 Sara Myers HIS 223 05/21/23
Carl von Clausewitz was one of the most prominent war strategists of the time. Scholars and military experts have used his work to define their war strategies. In this analysis, I will look into his various pieces to understand more about him and how they can be used to develop military tactics. The main idea behind his work is that war strategy can get your enemies to bend toward your will. He states that war is a duel on a massive scale. 1 If we were to construct a war as a unit, it would involve facing off against each other in countlesss fights. Each combatant aims to exert physical force to force the other to submit. He also claims that even though war is an act of aggression, it is not an isolated event. 2 The will of the people determines the outcome of a war. Over time, society and the war will change. This means that the differences between the countries and armies will also change. If the war is over in one striike, the military must take drastic measures to maintain its will. If a war can be stopped and resolved in one strike, why would it still need to be fought? Politicians should talk about the tensions in the communities insteead. According to Clausewitz, every war has to be resolved in a manner that is both single- handedly successful and simultaneous. 3 He states that if all the necessary means are raised simultaneously, then the battle's outcome can be considered a single solution. However, if the war's outcome is unfavorable, the ensuing battle's means can significantly decrease. Unprovoked attacks, which could follow a successful cease-fire, would be confined to the first and last stages. According to Carl von Clausewitz, iff both factions are armed, there will be hatred, which must be resolved for peace to prevail. Defense and attack are two different actions, and they are not linear. A good defense can beat an excellent attack on the battlefield and help prevent a 1 Clausewitz, Carl von. On War. conflict from escalating. The principles of Clausewitz's Theory of War can be seen in modern conflict resolution. According to Dr. Jasmine Cajic, the public's support is vital to the military during a war. 4 A deciisive and active approach is the only way to win a war. In terms of efficiency, the Western process is better than any other strategy due to its superior technological capabilities, discipline, and military tradition. It also can mobiilize capital and respond dynamically. Strategy is both an art and a science, involving various means to achieve a goal. Determining one's strategy is highly demanding in today's complex world. Three main factors determine whether or not a war can be won: good policy, compelling argumentts, and the international community's support. According to Jasmine Cajic, if a good policy exists, there will be favorable conditions for winning a war. 5 She uses Clausewitz's theories and strategies to help her when dealing with the army personnel of other countries. Since the original version of Clausewitz's "War Theory" was published in 1832, many different strategies have been developed based on his ideas. His methods have helped military forces win wars. They have also played a significant role in the resolution of conflicts. Due to his perspective on war being a massive batttle, many military strategists have focused on developing their own strategies. Bibliography 4 Čajić, Jasmin.
