1 5-3 Final Project Milestone 2: Narrative Paper Outline Sara Myers HIS 223: Modern War and Society 06/04/2023
2 Women have played a significant role in the US military throughout history. The expectations of women serving have significantly changed in a short amount of time. Women were not allowed to participate in combat during the early stages of American wars. Some would pretend to be a soldier, while others were covertly involved. Previously, women were often regulated to the sidelines as secretaries and nurses. Women in the armed forces eventually gained the opportunity to see active combat. Despite the debate about women serving in combat roles, the level of integration within the military increased significantly following the lifting of the ban on women in combat roles in 2015. I will be presenting five different topics that will cover women in American history. The second topic will talk about women in the American Civil War. It will cover the roles that women played in this conflict and the struggles for women's rights. The second topic will also cover the early suffragette movements, which laid the foundations for the fight for women's rights in the military. The third topic will discuss women during the First World War, while the fourth will cover the Second World War. The fifth will focus on the Gulf War. The paper will conclude with the war in Afghanistan and Iraq, both fought before and after the ban on women serving in combat roles was lifted in 2015. I will present each topic in an organized way to represent the flow of information. For the first topic I will be using Women in the American Revolution on the Homefront and on the battlefield. It is located in Women in War: The role of women in America’s war. The other resource I will be using is Four Traditions: Women of New York during the American Revolution. Both of these sources shows the various roles that women have played during times of war. In topic two I will be utilizing Women Soldiers of the Civil War from Prologue Magazine, Domina’s compilation of autobiographies from white women in the civil war, and the
3 articles of female soldiers and female nurses from Women in War: The Role of Women in America's Wars. These sources will help us learn about the various roles that women played during the war, similar to what we learned about the American Revolution. It will also show us how involvement grew after the revolution. During the first major war, women were often expected to play the role of nurse on both sides. Topic three sources include “Women in WWI” from the National WWI Museum and Memorial. This article covers the various roles that women played during the war and the Homefront. The National Park Service's article also covers the contributions of American women in WWI and the suffragettes' role in the war effort and the 19th amendment's passage. For topic four, I intend to use Dr. Spring's article "In the Military" from the National Women's History Museum. It covers the establishment of the W.A.AC and the advocating for women during the war. In this book, Morden covers the history of the Women's Army Corps from 1945 to 1978. He also talks about the integration act passed in 1948 which allowed women to serve in the US armed forces. Prior to this, women only served in times of war. I intend to use the statement of Colonel Irene O. Galloway as a source. She was the head of the Women's Army Corps. The advocating she issued was an attempt to exclude women with small children from military service. It was a setback in the women's rights movement and the treatment of women in the armed forces. Her article will also cover the negative portrayal of women in the military. This prompted military officials to urge women to maintain a feminine appearance. For the fifth topic I intend to use the article “The Role of Women in the Korean War” about the contribution of women to the Korean War. In addition, I plan to use a video interview Women Veterans Share Their Experiences during the Vietnam War with female Vietnam War veterans to discuss their experiences. I will also talk about how women's participation in military

4 service remained static even after the integration act was implemented. I intend to also talk about the role of women during the war in "Desert Storm/Desert Shield," which will cover the first instance that American females participated in mass deployment and were expected to do the same tasks as their male counterparts. I intend to use a section of Halvorson' "Understanding the Military," which talks about the culture, people, and institution of the military, in my last topic. I'll only be using this about women in the military after 9/11, and prior to 2015. Although it is dated it shows how women were still able to fight in Vietnam even though the combat ban had been lifted. In addition, I intend to use Captain Kester's article “A Man’s World? Women in the Air Force Have Pushed the Boundaries of Perceived Capabilities and roles” and Emma Moore’s “Women in Combat: Five-Year Status Update.” In 2015, the ban on women serving in combat was lifted, and Emma Moore covered the status of women's roles and capabilities in the Air Force five years later. My paper will cover the changes that women have experienced in the military over the years, beginning with the ban on women in combat being lifted in 2015 and continuing through the present. I will talk about how women's expectations have changed, as well as how they lost their positions upon pregnancy to be able to serve as effectively as men.
